Advice on monitor and gpu upgrade

Hey new to the forum and new to building my own pc so far ive managed just the 1 :p

Quick run down currently using I5 3350p 8gb 1600mhz ram and a gtx660ti, everything is stock using a 1080p 60hz monitor.

Looking for help from people who have the experience with these components, my build 2 year old and is starting to show my initial upgrade was a simple gtx970 paired with the AOC G2460PG the 144hz gsync model, how ever im not 100% on the monitor option cause of the price increase!

This turned into a massive headache more recently now freesync is close and promises to be no extra cost paired with what ever AMD put out to go head to head on price at least with the gtx970.

Do i hold off till AMD hit back with freesync and which ever r9 3xx model is within that £250-£300 price or go with what has been established as a great card in the gtx970.

Then from experience is the added cost of gsync worth it over going with the much cheaper models of 144hz that have no gsync if its being paired with a high powered gpu like the gtx970. Monitor resolution would still be 1080p for the 144hz models, or do i skip high refresh rate and go for 1440p! which can also be found for around the £300 mark.

Sorry for the long post, my heart says go for the gtx970 with a standard 144hz monitor but it appears the competition is very close to releasing new hardware and its caused a massive head ache haha

Thanks

Think its a question only you can answer. Which is can you wait. If so see what the freesync monitors bring to the table.

If not then a GTX 970 and 144mhz 1080p or 1440p monitor will enhance your experience but I would think about that i5 3350 CPU as it might hold you back.

If I were you I would look at improving your CPU first and possibly forget your monitor for now. Then think about what GPU to get and then last the monitor. Just because the GPU you buy would then decide which monitor to get.

Personally I have a feeling the R9 3xx's will be a bit toasty and if I was going AMD I would wait till they got rid of 28nm.

Also have you considered a SSD ?

If you're an infrequent upgrader, wait 2 or 3 months to see what the first round of freesync monitors bring to the table and then base your GPU decision on that. If you absolutely have to upgrade now the 970 is a good card, but you're more or less tying yourself into paying a inflated price for a gsync monitor when you upgrade that.

Thank you for the replies! i currently have a samsung 840 ssd not the largest capacity at 240gb but does its job well.

I do feel you on the cpu front my only concern is being stuck with ivybridge and having to fork out a large sum for a i7 at least brand new, ive never gone pre owned before but it could be worth looking into at least for now.

I'am infrequent with my upgrades, i dont overclock and doubt i ever will bit safe like that haha which is why i went with the none unlocked cpu. In the end you may be right and its something i will have to decide on and live with but thank you for bringing up things i missed like the cpu and how picking 1 brand will probably tie me into my monitor choice.

1 last thing could you recommend trust worthy sellers of pre-owned cpu? Ebay or any other means would be very thankful for any input.

Oh will also throw it out there my current mobo supports xfire but not sli, how ever my psu is a xfx 650watt bronze which i really don't think could handle something akin to r9 290 in xfire.

All in all looks like i am due a full system update but sadly have to do it in bits and bats haha
