Advice on neighbour's howling dog.

Thing is, what happens then?
The RSPCA eventually take it off him and then what? It gets an even more miserable life before likely being put down if it's not adopted within a certain time frame.
Not nesseccarily, the action you would hope would prompt the owner to sort something.

Without having read this thread closely, sounds like speaking to the neighbour would be best in the first instance. As with any neighbour dispute I guess.

Yeah, it could give him a proper kick up the arse to get it sorted out.

OP has spoken to him, but not much has changed.

Next door neighbour did this. Dog would whine from 730am till 6pm every day..... And all night at weekends. I assume she stayed out at her BFs or somewhere....
3 months it lasted.. We told her a couple of times it was not fair to the animal and she explained there was nothing she could do. She wrote a really sad letter to all of us that lived in the appartment block explaining how her mum had died and it was her dog inherited yadda yadda, it was a shame but still.

Luckily it sorted itself out, she moved out to a Place with more land and space for the dog, but jesus that was 3 months of hell.

Tell him a few times more. Tell the landlord a couple of times then tell the RSPCA at a last straw. Poor mutt.

Some breeds just don't like being left alone either. But people buy dogs spur of the moment without much thought into the breed other than the looks.

To be honest I'm getting tired of telling him about it as I've spoken to him about it three times already. Spoke to him about 10am this morning about it as well just before he left, he left sometime around 11am and I just got the first bout of howling at 11.50am...

If you've spoken to him then the only other option is to go to the RSPCA and the Council. Not with the aim of getting the dog taken away from him, but to give him a kick up the behind to sort it out.

Both the council and RSPCA would want logs on the noise, and the council will probably want to send a noise inspector busybody round at some point to hear it from themselves.

Owning a big dog when you live in a flat is pretty dodgy in the first place IMO - you'd have to make sure you had three decent/long-ish walks a day.

Actually, that's not a bad idea

Unless the OP has the free time and inclination (loves dogs) to do it every day then that is a bad idea IMO - The guy should be paying a dog walker to come in at lunchtime every weekday if he's not able to.

We have two little guys, and the maximum (if ever because my wife is at home) that they are own their own for is 2 hours.

is it not less of an issue given there are two of them?

What about suggesting one of those pet cam things?

Never used one myself, but iirc you can use them via a mobile phone so you can give vocal reassurance, I'm sure you can even get something that dispenses a little treat for the dog whenever you want it to.

I'd possibly hold off as long as could before I start making any complaints to any authority, I mean, you've still got to live there, but I can definitely sympathise with having a noisy dog within earshot for most of the day.

I've held off for just over three weeks, surely that's long enough?
Quite a few good contructive ideas posted here that I might as well try, all except for FlakGunna and his cheapshot comment. I already have a job Flak, that's how I pay the rent on this place. It's also the reason why I have been complaining to the new tenant about the noise as I cannot get peace and quiet in the flat I pay to live in.
Perhaps you should get a life? Join reality?

Not sure if it's been suggested, but the guy could try one of those plug in pet stress relief things? They're supposed to help dog feel more comfortable and de-stressed which might help the separation anxiety a bit.

Have a similar problem here too. New neighbours moved in about a month ago and they leave their dog in the yard all day where all it does is constantly bark at the back door and bark at the back gate. Tried speaking to them, but they're Romanian and claim not to understand English, despite them constantly chatting away in English to each other. It's doing my ******* nut in at the moment, it's bad enough trying to sleep with my condition but this is making it impossible. Tried the council, they ain't interested in the slightest.
