Advice on new GPU to replace GTX580

You must have had some serious stuff installed to exceed 2GB at 1920x1080 being that I only use 2.2GB including caching at 2560x1440 with 60 mods installed (from the thread on the PC forums).

I don't think saying that 2GB can be exceeded is that useful - of course it can but without knowing the exact mods used it doesn't really mean anything. Your mods might have exceeded 2GB but the OPs mods (or the mods he wants to use) might not. It's probably possible to mod it to the teeth and exceed 3GB but that doesn't necessarily mean that it would be recommended to a Titan/6GB 7970/4GB 670 or 680.

All of which is really quite moot as I agree that he should get a 3GB 7950/70 anyway as it's cheaper and faster and has more VRAM as well which essentially does take the debate out of the question.

To the OP - make sure you install RadeonPro if you get one as for me Skyrim was unplayable without it though that could/probably be Crossfire related.

If you set ugrids to 7 with all them mods on, you can easily exceed 2gb I imagine. If Ugridstoload=5, then that my be a different case..
(Skyrim modded craps out mainly around the forests on my GTX580's 1.5 VRAM)

edit: and thats at 720p!

It helps.;)

I blootered 2Gb ages ago with a modded Skyrim which ultimately made me make the jump to the 79's from 6950>70 CrossFire, the grunt was ample but the vram wasn't, nothing to do with caching, it simply wasn't enough-poor mods or not doesn't matter when you want to use them without sacrifice.

Sure I could have done without certain texture mods, but I don't wan't/have to with 3Gb.:D

Exactly. I want to play it maxed out with every mod I want installed. For extreme rimming @ 1080p, 2GB is simply insufficient.

I'm going to make a quick hop from 7850>7950 for about £60 and then have another look in October/November.

Exactly. I've run SKYRIM very heavily modded @ 1080p and it isn't enough. I wonlt play it again until I have upgraded, once you've played it with ENB and tons of mods you can't go back, it's like flicking to BBC1 after you've just had BBC1 HD on - the horror!!!

I agree, it's best to wait until the 7 series is fully out. I heard there were two separate hard launches, I could be wrong.

which mods were these mate?

If we are talking about vram, can any of these 3gb cards run Crysis 3 @1600p maxed out.

The reason I ask is what is the point of making a case for getting a 3gb card to run a modded version of skyrim when it can not run a bog standard game like Crysis 3 maxed out.

My point is whatever graphics card you use, at some point you will have to compromise on the settings.

Oh and bring on RTW II if it is as good as the first one these forums will not see me for a while.:D:)

i am thinking of the same move, got my eye on 2 7970 Xfire tho, only thing holding me back is what might be around very soon!

so my advice, wait a bit more, see what comes :)

Because the op specifically asked about 3 titles of which 2 aren't released yet and didn't mention gaming@1600p.

Skyrim is a different beast in comparison with the rest of the games out there where it needs vram more than gpu grunt (at the high end) when it comes to modding with textures.

Ugrids were mentioned earlier probably eating 2Gb vram when set@7, it can go to 13 iirc.

I gave a lot of texture mods and about only another 15 mods, but it uses about 2.4Gb, the guy asks for advice and mine is don't get less than 3Gb regardless whst brand he picks as it's an awful lot of money for some.:)

Don't get me wrong, I would recommend a HD 7950 under most circumstances and in this case as well.

What I am trying to say is there are games here now or coming in the near future that are both demanding of GPU grunt and loads of vram.

If someone were to try and run Crysis 3 on a single Titan @1600p maxed they could be very disappointed, it has got enough vram but not enough GPU grunt, or in other words they would have to compromise on the settings.
