Advice on new HDD please (regarding noise)

Hi all,

My current hard drive is the noisiest component in my system at the moment, and as I will be upgrading to Vista OEM in the near future I think I will replace it.

My question is which hard drive do you guys recommend for being quiet? The seek noise in particular on my current HDD (Seagate Barracuda) is particularly loud.

I am not interested in a raid setup or anything like that, just a single SATA2 HDD thats preferably at least 200GB.

Samsung drives are generally known for being pretty quiet but if the noise is really obnoxious then I'd suggest getting a Silentmaxx enclosure or similar which should make the drive inaudible.

Thanks for the reply! I don't know too much about HDD enclosures, I was under the impression that they could potentially cause heat issues...?

Yes, the reason I bought the Seagate drive was because it was supposed to be very quiet, but the seek noise is the loudest thing in my pooter at the moment!

Enclosures can potentially cause heat problems but most have fans or alternatively (as in the case of the Silentmaxx) it is basically a giant heatsink so it shouldn't be that much of an issue.

Thanks mate, I'll look into that.

Just been looking at the Samsung HDDs, they are pretty cheap so I might get one and a SilentMaxx for overkill LOL.

DutchSchaeffer, if you do get a samsung and a silentmaxx, post abck how well it works, im in the same position, except im using a 20GB -8 yr old seagate which is starting to worry me, it makes about the same noise as my xbox 360

ive got one of the new 500gb samsungs....you wont need the enclosure

Samsung are superbly quiet.
