Hi, i have a contract with unlimited/texts/data and 500 mins for about £15 a month. I'm out of contract currently.
I have a Wildfire S which has been reliable but is pretty naff.
If i sign up on same contract i can get a HTC One SV for £90.

Are these phones any good?

Compared to the Wildfire it's Dual core 1200mhz v 600 single core in Wildfire. 8gb v 512mb in the Wildfire.
Is this really as much of a difference as it sounds?
It supports 4G but i'd be on 3G.

I can get a HTC Desire C for free, Samsung Galaxy SIII Mini for £80 or Iphone 5 for about £500.

I'm not a big phone person other than unlimited internet so don't fancy paying insurance for it.

I wouldn't get the One SV, it has a very lacklustre 480x800 display which doesn't cut these days. What are you other choices of phones? The Desire C is far too old and the Galaxy S3 Mini is a sheep in wolf's clothing (has a comparatively) poor chipset.

The One SV is a very underrated phone to be honest, people look at the specs of the display but it really does look good and there are a lot of bargains to be had. I've actually tested one for a period so probably well placed to judge it - I have an HTC One as my main phone at the moment so I'm not unused to a decent display.. :)

Out of the devices you mention I'd pick the SV every time.

Cheers guys. A useful insight.
I can get the HTC Windows 8S for £29.99, Xperia J for £9.99.
Blackberry 9790 for £59.99.
Above £100 i start to get to Iphone/Galaxy 4 territory.

How much can you afford if you were to buy a phone outright?

I ask as I've just got the new Virgin mobile SIM only (30 day rolling contract only) Unlimited mins, texts, data (& Blackberry services, though its the same price with or without this) for £15 per month. Maybe you could get something like a Nokia Lumia 520 / 620 sim free and not be tied into a long contract :)

So One SV if i don't want hassle.

620 if i want to pay for the phone and not be tied in?

Where do you buy them from without contracts though?

Also, that Virgin deal I mention above, they are on the T-Mobile network as well, so you'll get the same signal :)

Makes no odds really as i'm only limited to 500 mins and i never use over 100. Thanks anyway though. Useful to see all sides.

620 has naff battery life according to people so it's looking like SV it might be as i don't mind being tied into an 18month contract as i have no home phone or BB so i'd be using it anyway. :)

CPW sell them as PAYG or SIM FREE, plus the Jungle Rainforest site etc... :)

I'm a bit of a dinosaur when it comes to phones but I want to upgrade from my current Samsung Tocco Lite and the 620 has caught my eye. Couple of questions though:

If I buy the PAYG phone can I get a giff gaff sim and stick that in instead? Or would I be better off just buying the sim free phone and putting a giff gaff sim in? I'm not really clued up with regards to sims or tariffs but I've heard of GG before!

A lot of the time the O2 PAYG phones work with GiffGaff as they use the O2 network, also a lot of CPW phones are unlocked any way, though T-Mobiles weren't when I last bought one (things maybe different now though?)

Sim free is the easiest option but not always the cheapest, depends on your budget?

Sim free is £10 more than the PAYG so I could stick a sim in that and transfer my current number. One last thing, are the sims in the 620 the standard size or smaller? I think I've seen something somewhere that they take mini sims (?) or am I talking rubbish!

To transfer your number just get a PAC code from your current supplier and then you can sort out the transfer to the new GiffGaff chip online :)

I think it takes the micro sim, have a look on Nokia's websit
