I am considering getting the above system from OC to replace my aging Gigabyte P57. Game wise I will be playing games like Warframe, Baldurs Gate 3 and ones I dont even know have come out yet! I am a bit of a graphics snob, I like my games to be smooth but high graphics, otherwise I feel gaming is pointless if the graphics wont immerse me!

I am years behind and would appreciate some feedback in comparison to the other shortlisted option which was a laptop Lenovo Legion 5 Ryzen 7, 16GB , RTX 3060.

Kolink Inspire Series K2 ARGB Micro-ATX Case - Black Window

AMD Ryzen 5 5500 Six Core 3.6GHz (4.2GHz Boost) Processor - MPK

Team Group Vulcan Z T-Force 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 PC4-25600C16 3200MHz Dual Channel Kit - Grey

Build Stock* MSI GeForce RTX 3060 VENTUS 2X 12GB OC Graphics Card

WD Blue 500GB 3D NAND SSD 2.5" SATA 6Gbps Solid State Drive *SI STOCK* (WDS500G2B0A)

ADDON AWU-G30 Dual-Band Wireless AC1300 Nano USB Network Adapter

No OS

= £865.91

I was going to phone as ask for a new PSU to be added into the build, can anyone recommend which?

I dont want this to go over the price of the laptop (which is my max), a main reason for a desktop was because its currently cheaper. ( i have an old BenQ 3D monitor I will be using)

Thanks.

Thank you for all your input!

I havent self-built a PC for over a decade and I am not confident having to install CPU and coolers, the rest I would be fine with. Think you could spec me up a 'better PC for cheaper?' If its a lot cheaper I would definitely look into it more. Something that includes those PSU and that 1TB SSD would be great.

Thank you so much Haz!!!

Even at £1,003 it is still cheaper than the Legion 5 (which is about £1,199) so that is still a win in my book and the AMD one is also even better price. I would go AMD I think, I usually have their Processor along with a geforce card.

Tetras - Thanks for the input, I will look into it when I find out how much wiggle room I have on final specific budget.

How are those processors/coolers like to fix? As I said I havent done this for a LONG time and those are the one I feel most iffy about.

After a night to think on it I decided to go with the cheaper options (the initial AMD list rather than the upgrades. As I am meant to be spending as little as possible atm. So thanks guys. All ordered :)

Quick cabling question.. I plugged in the ones from the case except two.

I have a usb3.0 plug from the case (blue) that I cant find a home for :( Alsoa case push cable for RGB but I assume thats lights but I am no bothered about them.

So I plugged in the CPU fan, GPU to the PSU and MB plug to.. is there anything else that needs to plug in except the mystery blue USB cable?

OK I found the USB socket!

What do I plug the sata cables into? I cant find anything that uses them?

The front case ... those tiny small things are all plugged in to.. except the RGB one. That JFP1, power LED, HDD LED etc is all plugged in

That just leaves me with one thing not plugged in from the front of the case. It was on the cable the front fans were tied to. I think that is for adding extra fans though.. so think I am done

Well I turned it on. Case fans are on, MB has a white light on, GPU fans are on but no pic on the monitor. Any ideas?

I tried re-seating the RAM, CPU power cable. Tried a new HD cable.

I am loathe to try re-seating the GPU as it was a hassle to fit in.

I am not sure if I am meant to be hearing anything more than the sound of the fans? LIke 'loading noises'?

Just noticed the light I can see is the CPU warning light. WIll look at it tomorrow.

I just re seated the CPU and the CPU power is plugged in.

THe HDMI cable was plugged into the GPU.

I tried a different cable and port on the monitor.

CPU fault light is still on. NOt sure what else i can do but reseat it abut that didnt work I had a quick look and the processor looked ok. I am off to bed will think about it in the morning now

Is it a 5500? It is possible that the BIOS doesn't support this CPU, but my understanding was that unrecognised CPUs (the 5500, 5600 non-x and 5700X) would still boot on an unsupported bios. Most B550 boards have BIOS flashback without a supported CPU (if this is the problem), but I would not try flashing until you have exhausted all other options.

What cooler are you using? Overtightening the cooler can sometimes cause problems.
Yes it is the 5500. I am using the cooler that came with it.

Now I was wondering if the cooler being on to tight might be the issue! Thanks for confirming it could be an issue, I will check it to day. UPDATE: I loosened it up to I can move it slightly when I push it and still light comes on.

I have checked the internet and it say althought it supports 5000 series it may need flashing, so will try that second. Anyone else have any suggestions? I dont want to keep taking this thing apart, its in the case already and to reinstall the cooler I need to take it all out again.

I have tried taking the ram out and just trying single sticks and no stick. With no stick the CPU lights doesnt come on, but the DRAM light does.

UPDATE: Still an issue with the GPU out.

Compatibility/BIOS is the only thing left I can think of. The pins looked fine on the CPU when I reseated it. UPDATE: Flashback worked. I now have a image on my screen!

Now its the BIOS light that is lit.. does it ever end :p UPDATE: OK, W10 is installed.. doing ok so far!

Sorry I meant BOOT light on the 'EZ Debug LED' - I think it was just due to there being no OS, I installed Windows and the light went out. Seems to be working so far. Just need to get the Wifi adpater tomorrow then should be good! Just installing the GPU drivers and MB software atm.

Thanks for all the help guys!

For all the trouble its caused, it should make the use of it even sweeter :p

Ok good it is all working. With all the issues you at least know you can fix the thing if you have problems in the future.

Wifi adapter ? doesnt the mobo have built in wifi ?
Not that I can see.. has it? The Wifi one was an extra £100.. so I am happy to only pay £40 for a wifi & bluetooth adapter :p

Yes it makes the memory run at the correct speed ( 3200mhz if that what you purchased ) instead of the motherboard default speed, It's worth checking.
Ahh I will do!

At the moment your RAM will be running at 2133 mhz when it should be running at 3600mhz (depending on what RAM you bought , i really hope you purchased the Ryzen tuned ram and not the Patriot). Ryzen is very dependent on decent ram because the Infinity fabric that connects the chiplets is unfluenced by the ram speed.

Go into BIOS and look for the XMP/DODC settings and click on it, should give you the full speed and if it is Ryzen tuned ram it should not need to much tinkering to get it running at the correct speed and timings.
Yes it was the ryzen RAM I bought from OC.
The Wifi MB must have been out of stock and it defaulted to the non-wifi (bought it elsewhere) I just never realised.

Only only one like that I can find it 'A-XMP' DRAM Frequency . I changed it from 'auto' (3200) to DDR4-3600. IS that right? It was under 'OC' - so not sure if its the right place?

Go into BIOS , click memory then click an XMP profile. There are normanlly 2 profiles , 1 will be best timings and 2 will be best stability. After you have chosen a profile pres escape and choose to save the settings and restart then it will be done.

To check you have done it right download cpuz and look in the memory tab. It should show up 1600 or 1800 mhz (depending on what you have) with the timings below it. It only shows up half the actual speeds because DDR stands for double data rate so its just how it shows up.

Optional stability testing. I like to run Prime95 blend for a couple of hours , if it drops no worker threads then it will most likely be stable for most desktop tasks. If it drops threads or crashes you may have to tweak the settings. CPUz also has a benchmark/stress tool.
CPU-Z (glad it came with the MB software) says ...

Type DDR4
CHannels # Dual
Size 16 GBytes
NB Frequency 1796.4 mhz
