I used to be involved in graphics and 3d work many years ago. I only know a handful still in it, always seemed to be a struggle to make decent money at it especially working for yourself. I switched to development work a long time ago.
I was just reflecting when we were at it we used a dedicated rendering server or a farm of everyone's low end machines at the weekends. These days it looks like you really need the GPU of dedicated machines.
Also more people seem to be doing it. So there seems to be more viable than it used to be a career.
