Lo,
Been a while since I last updated my PC so have been reading several sites to get clued up again.

Main use is gaming, whether WoW,Total war games BFBC or Dragon age :)

Current PC is Win Vista64, Intel core2duo E6750, 4gb ram, Geforce 9800gts, enermax liberty 500w psu.

Im looking at getting and think its good value for money atm and should see a huge increase:

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 460 OC 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with HAWX2 PC-Game £144.98
(£123.39)
Intel Core i5 760 2.80GHz (Lynnfield) (Socket LGA1156) - Retail £140.99
(£119.99)
Gigabyte GA-P55-USB3 Intel P55 (Socket 1156) DDR3 Motherboard £92.99
(£79.14)
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit - OEM (GFC-00599) £82.99
(£70.63)
Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMX4GX3M2A1600C9) £65.99
(£56.16)
Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (HD103SJ) £41.11
(£34.99)
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev 2 CPU Cooler (Socket 939 / AM2 / AM3 / 775 / 1156 / 1366) £15.98
(£13.60)

Is it worth spending another £40 to get the Geforce GTX 470 or is the 460 as good?
Will my 500w PSU be fine for this upgrade? Never had any probs with it so far.

Keeping current case, Keyboard etc Monitor is 20" NEc Multisync 1680x1050. Old but still working fine.

Any other thoughts?

That is quite a nice set up and will run most of your games at max or pretty much near to max based on your screen res.

The 470 is a good card but really not worth the extra right now. If you do want to spend £50 more on a card I would go for the HD 6870 @ £199 in my view the best bang for buck card right now. But like I said the 460 is a rocking card and will play all your games with ease.

The Enermax Liberty is a good PSU and none of the components are particularly power hungry, so you should be fine with it for a while.

Maybe a better CPU cooler if your planning on OC'ing? Not sure how good the rev 2 is but the first was'nt great, above average though.

One last question i think.

Is it worth upgrading to an i5 from my core2duo now or would it be better in the long run to wait till early next year when the new cpus should come out?

Ive had my current pc for over 2 years now and its going fine with wow raiding and bfbc2 really the only demanding games i play until next year.

OK
yes PSU is fine
personally Id go for the i5 now, but whether its worth it or not only you can decide
Actually 470 is slightly quicker than 6870 (and its cheaper) 6870 is cooler, quieter and scales better for multi gpu set ups, but if youre thinking that route then you would need a bigger psu for the 2nd card (maybe not now but when you add the 2nd card) and also a better mobo which does symmetrical xfire
That said for your res a 460 would be more than enough, so if youve no plan to upgrade the monitor anytime soon, save your cash

Thx for the advice folks.

I think ive decided to get the gfx card and win 7 for now and wait on the rest until early next year and see what happens with the sandy bridge.

Whatever happens it will prolly last me over 2 years or so like this core2duo has so best bang for the buck as it were.
