Hi

I currently have a 120Gb Samsung 840 that I have had for 10 months, it has 1.94Tb written, I am wanting to purchase another SSD to put in RAID 0 using the Gigabyte motherboard built in raid, do I have to purchase another 840 or can I use an 840 EVO with it?

thanks

can use the evo just fine,it will only run as fast as the slowest drive ect

Hi Wazza, thanks for the quick reply...

Am i right in saying if one drive is 130Mb/s write and the other is 500Mb/s write then in stripe RAID 0 the total write speed will be 2 x 130Mb/s (260Mb/s)

both have 500MB+ read speeds so in RAID 0 should be 1000MB+

cheers

im not 100% sure as it spreads the data across the two drives,it will play a part but how much it affects the overall write speeds idk

it shouldn't affect things much if at all,ive never really looked into it

I see OCuK still sell the 120Gb 840 - but as the 840 EVO is same price and a better drive is it not worth me getting the 840 EVO instead and allowing it to "drop back" in write speed - or will it be better using identical drives....hmmm

Probably better off running each one separately so you benefit from the faster speeds of the EVO rather than throttling it. You could have your OS on the slower disk and then run apps and games off the EVO.

i know, thinking of possibly selling the 840 as ive just learned the 840 EVO has 750MB/s read and 1050MB/s write with RAPID enabled....even IOPS double up too, RAPID uses 1Gb of your RAM for caching... I have 8Gb so have enough I suppose
