Im looking to setup a new gaming rig and am looking for some advice regarding SataII compatibilty and raid0.

Spec will be (parts that are important)

Intel Core 2 DUO LGA775 E6600 2.40GHz Retail / Gigabyte 965P DS3 / 2GB GeIL PC2-6400C4 DDR2 Dual Channel Kit - Bundle
2 x Western Digital Caviar SE16 320GB 3200KS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM
FSP Sparkle FX600-GLN Epsilon 600W ATX2.0 PSU

Will this setup be able to run the 2 HDs as raid0 and take advantage of SataII ? Ive read about FAQ and got confused about the SataII controllers. Is this something thats software or hardware? Will it be on the MB or do you need to buy a seperate controller?

Any help appreciated

The RAID functionality on the DS3 is provided by a pair of ports connected to a Gigabyte controller rather than from the Intel southbridge as on most boards. For some reason the bandwidth available to the Gigabyte controller is pretty poor and it seems to limit RAID0 transfer rates to about 110Mb/s with an average over the array of about 100Mb/s. In contrast the Intel southbridge controllers can easily provide well over 140Mb/s average.

To answer your question directly, yes the board can run those disks in RAID0 without any extra hardware. It's just that there are boards which can do it better.

Have changed the MB to :

BFG nForce 680 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

Anyone have experience of raid0 and sataII setup with this board?
