Hi

My pc was this:

XP pro
Motherboard: Asus P5N32-E SLI
Psu: Hiper psu 580w 4m580
Cpu: Q6600 G0 SLACR
Ram: Elixir DDR2 1gb x2
GPU: EVGA 8800GTX 768mb

I'm about to swap xp for 7.

Today i put in the Q6600 G0 stepping version, I had a total of 4 GB ram in there, ta couple gb of the two listed above which run i think at 800mhz as well as a no name 2gb module running at 667mhz.

No as i booted nothing happened and had a LONG beeping sound, so i reset the bios and such, no luck. so i turned to the RAM i started swapping things around and no luck, until i removed one of the elixir sticks and ended up running 3gb one elixir module of 1 gb and the no name 2gb. and the computer booted fine. i know the other stick is fine cos i tested it elsewhere.

so i was wondering, why can't i run all the modules to make a total of 4gb with the q6600? cos when i had my old cpu in (Core 2 Duo E6750 @ 2.67) all three sticks worked fine (obv xp was recognising only 3 n a bit)

so are there any known issues or considerations when upgrading a cpu when it comes to RAM speed or anything. Thanks for any help.

I'd say that mixing all that weird RAM wouldn't be liked by your Mobo most likely...

Saying that which version of 7 did you upgrade to? 32bit 7 will only recognise 3GB

I haven't yet upgraded to 7 (doing it right now actually) so i haven't tested how the ram goes together on win7.

Thing is mixing up the 2x1gb (which are identical elixirs@ 800mhz) with the no name 2gb@667mhz didn't cause any problems whatsoever on xp with the dual core E6750 @ 2.67. it's only when i swapped it out for a Q6600 that the weirdness began.

Yeah it is odd.... Do either of the Elixir stuff work with the noname? or does one Elixir stick just not work at all and the other one does?

If one doesn't work, try running memtest with the dodgy stick

i know its not what your after, but you really really want to replace that PSU ASAP. well, unless you want to become a member of this club:

Hiper Explosive club

as for your actual problem, have you tried upping the memory voltage a little bit. the motherboard might just be struggling to give the power it needs to all 4 RAM sticks and the new quad core CPU

One of the Elixir sticks is actually in there now with the no name 2gb stick and they are working fine. the other elixir appears to be dodgy, but i did do a boot with it alone in there and it booted up fine. so it's not failed or anything, will run more tests when win 7 finishes installing.

Ha ha! Yeah Thanks, i have been told on here to get rid of the Hiper and i'm planning on it! when i get paid next month, cos i did hear of the exploding hiper club and it spooked me! Plus i'll need the extra power and efficiency if i am to overclock the Q6600.

As for the RAM issue. I did consider power distribution as a factor, and will have a look into it once i have win 7 up and running. (i've never upped the voltage for RAM, though i can figure it out, is there anything to look out for or be careful with?)

I assume the different RAMs running at different speeds shouldn't be a problem as long as they are getting enough power?

The Q6600 stock speed is 2.4GHz (9x266MHz).

The E6750 stock speed is 2.66GHz (8x333MHz).

Perhaps the different bus speeds of the 2 processors, along with whatever RAM multiplier your motherboard is selecting, has caused the 667MHz RAM to run too far beyond its specification.

If you look at the memory tab of CPU-Z you'll see what speed the RAM is running at.

Remember to double the speed shown by CPU-Z as it's Double Data Rate RAM.

Ahh, that makes sense, Will try twhat you suggested, thanks!

Just a follow up. The problem outlined above has vanished! After a fresh win7 64 install i decided to throwv in the second Elixir 1gb stick to make a total RAM of 4gb. and unlike earlier it actually worked, had a rummage around to see how well the Elixirs are getting along with the no name 2gb stick and how the motherboard was handling them and they are registering fine it's all good.

The elixirs running at 800mhz and the no name is running at 666mhz as they should.

Thanks for all the help guys, you've been very informative and i've actually learned something!
