Far Far Away!
Hi there, so I finally got my SSD today, and just got round to doing a "speed test" using CrystalDiskMark:

Here are the results, which don't seem to be what's advertised?

Can anyone enlighten me?

Corsair Force GT 120GB SSD. Plugged into 6gb/s port on motherboard using a 6gb/s SATA Cable.

Thanks

Hi "Surveyor"

My Motherboard

I've plugged my SSD into that Dark Blue ports that show "SATA 6gb/s" on the image provided. Is this right?

I'm not to sure if I set it to AHCI, is there a way to tell if I did or not?

Thanks

No.

You need to use one of the white/grey (Intel) ports below the dark blue ones.

Download AS SSD.

It'll say in the box top left if you're running in AHCI or IDE mode.

If you are running in IDE mode then: Switching from IDE to AHCI

Are you happy with the fast boot ups?

Alright Wazza,

Yeah happy with boot speeds for sure!
Shame that you only get 111gb of space out of the box, and then I had 75gb free once windows was installed with drivers lol.

Very curious of these speeds now... Doesn't seem to be getting near(ish) to what's advertised?

As ssd is a different kind of test, for sandforce drives its best to use atto, and those figures are right,as for gb's that's the way windows calculates space, its always less than advertised, plus a small amount of space is reserved and hidden to help maintain the drive and replace any dead cells ect

The advertised speeds are:

- Sequential read speeds of up to 555 MB/s
- Sequential write speeds of up to 495 MB/s

The only benchmark you're likely to see those speeds with a SandForce based drive is ATTO.

If you look at your ATTO results you'll see they're spot on. The write speeds are a little higher if anything.

Only having 111GB is the difference between drive manufacturers measuring in decimal and Windows measuring in binary.

It happens with all HDDs and SSDs.

If you want to free up some disk space then the first two things to look at are:

1) The Page File. Don't disable it completely but you can reduce it to a much smaller size.

2) The Hibernation file. With 16GB of RAM this will reserve 12GB on the SSD. If you don't use it turn it off:

  • Open an elevated Command Prompt with administrator rights by typing Cmd in Start Search, and then hit Ctrl + Shift + Enter keyboard shortcut.
  • Or select Run as Administrator from the Cmd in search results.
  • Type the following command and hit Enter: powercfg /hibernate off

Ok, i am an idiot. After switching the cables, i got a black screen/ white text error and it wouldn't load windows unless i selected the drive in bios. So i put my windows disk in, to do a clean install again. The windows setup loaded, and i formatted the SSD.

I then went onto install windows, and it was hanging on "expanding windows files 58%" i restarted the comp and nothing loads now. It wont let me try to reinstall windows, it now just hangs on the starting windows screen. After selecting "windows setup" from boot screen. The other option is "windows memory diagnostic" or press F8 for the other options.

If i have my old hdd plugged in, it also doesnt recognise the ssd as a boot option. It only shows up in advanced mode. But i still cant select it as primary!

Please say i haven't rogered the SSD!

Sorry for grammar & spelling.

Were you set to ahci mode before you installed windows?

Hi it was set to ACHI by default i believe. Bios still shows ACHI. Installation screwed up and now i cant correct it unless i can format the ssd another way. Ive tried taking out my HDD but the options i showed, are still the same: "windows setup" (it just hangs on starting windows). Or windows memory diagnostic.

Ive managed to get onto the install screen again. Will keep posting.
What a spud i am. :D

You might be best doing a secure erase making the drive 'box fresh' so to speak.
Parted Magic has been mentioned here as it has an erase tool.

Ok so the expanding hung again. I've noticed that booting does't seem to notice the ssd in the Intel sata port, but when i put it in the marvell dark blue port, it notices the drive.

So confused.

you can turn off the marvell ports in the bios,id do that if your not using them, then keep your ssd connected to the intel sata3 port

you can download parted magic to a bootable usb stick or burn to a cd,then boot from dvd drive (f8) select dvd drive, and do a secure erase and start again

makesure the sata cable if fully connected to the mb and ssd as it dont click in place at the ssd end it just slides on

Well what a Pa'lava that was. I am now back in windows and I have disabled the marvell ports for now. I have reinserted the HDD, and windows now loads ok.

I appreciate the help here. I will do another speed test on the SSD soon. lol

So after formatting the drive, reinstalling Windows ect, plugging it into the correct sata port these are the results. Only have Window & drivers and 1 game installed at the minute. But Did 3 just to be sure. Very happy with the drive now and speeds.

Thanks for the help Wazza and Surveyor.
