A little confused.

I want to add an SSD to my system, but also upgrade to windows 8 at the same time.

My current win 7 install is obviously on HDD, but the new one will be on the SSD. Whats the easiest and painless way to achieve this. I would like to keep my files as well.

And finally, once everything is running, is there a way to migrate my steam install and games to the SSD?

Many thanks for any advice.

Disconnect your current HDD, add the new SSD and install Windows 8 on there.

Prior to this, I think you'll need to back everything up to another drive or disc or something else. That's what I'd do, but I don't know of another way to transfer files from a drive with one OS to one with another.

When you ever reconnect the hdd all your files will be there for you, just a question of copying them over. This may need a quick visit to the bios, to setup the bootorder.

Good idea to reorder your files on the hdd, edit the links. Then if you lose the os your files will always be there

I would look at the samsung SSDs, the 830 is still very good and is better than the standard 840.

Disconnect the HDD as Antony said. Head into the BIOS and check the sata mode is set to ACHI. Change the Boot priority to DVD and install the OS to the SSD. Once the OS is installed you can reconnect the HDD.

The samsung SSDs come with the magician software which will automatically tweak the OS and SSD for performance. You also get norton ghost for making and restoring backups/migration.

You dont really want all your docs etc on the SSD, much better to keep them on the HDD really. I wouldnt say upgrading to windows 8 is really worth it, it's main feature is the metro UI which is designed for touchscreens.....if you want it fair enough.

I burned the developers preview .iso to dvd and installed it to my laptop. You can google for articles on windows 8 reviews and comparisons to windows 7.

It does boot a little faster but my webcam wasn't supported by the metro UI. So I had to install msn seperately and the webcam (vx 3000) drivers for windows 7...bit of a faff really.

Give the preview a try for free and see what you think. I doubt you'll want to pay for the upgrade though
