Advice on this config for BASIC system please?

Couldn't agree more with stulids points....You also have to consider by going with the phenom it's a "dead socket". The only upgrade is bulldozer which to be frank is no where near as good as sandybridge....in short your build is false economy :(

The mobo stulid spec'd is really good for a budget build, it has a PCI-Express 3 lane too so we know it's Ivybridge compatible. Supposedly we could see Ivybridge released at the end of next month. Might pay to wait and see what prices these CPUs will go for and what it does to the price of the current sandybridge stock.

If you were to upgrade it later, put an SSD in, rather than a faster CPU.

You can't do any better than Stulid's spec. There's no corners to shave off at all.

It's very close to what i spec'd over 10 days ago, when everyone else was saying llano lol

I still hate that case. The zalman Z9 is on offer this week for £46, again it depends wether the OP is just brainstorming or if he is buying for his friend. Parts spec'd will vary on what's in stock and on offer.

Hey all, guess who's back?
First thankyou all so much for your continued support through this it's mega helpful to me.
Now we are 100% getting the components Thursday and Friday with a view to assembling it at the weekend haha. What do y'all reckon to this final spec?

Am I missing anything with the motherboard etc.. or shall I just go for this? It looks good to me.

OR this is an AMD build I came up with, it has the cheapest AM3+ 900 board and the £99 bulldozer 4.2ghz quad on offer this week, would the performance be significantly improved with the quad core? I'm thinking 4.2ghz quad would tear through anything he needed like nobody's business.
Compared to the i3?

Use the mobo stulid and myself spec'd, it's literally a pound or so more and adds USB3. Forget about AMD, i still hate that case lol but the rest of the intel spec looks good

Bit tired atm but as far as I can tell the Gigabyte board has PCI-e 3 slot (Ivybridge compatibility stuffz) The Asus only has PCI-e 2 slot for a saving of a packet of crisp. :)
