Perhaps this belongs on the 'General' board...?

Hi guys,

I've been out of the loop a while, so need some advice on a possible upgrade. Have currently got an Asus P5W-DH motherboard, 2x1GB of G.Skill HZ PC6400 DDR2, E6600 and 8800GTX. Am running Windows Vista x64.

Since buying Crysis the other day, I've come to the conclusion I need to upgrade some of the parts. So far I've picked up another couple of gigs of the same ram. Now I'm considering a quad core CPU, since they're on the cheap side. I understand my current motherboard will support it, but should I consider upgrading it to another one?

Am currently running my E6600 at 3ghz no problem, all air cooled (CPU using an Arctic Freezer Pro 7, which I'm assuming I can reuse on a Q6600?). Not too interested in difficult to manage/maintain overclocks, but happy to go for easy ones (3ghz with a dual-core Conroe was easy to attain with my current setup).

And advice?

A festive 'taaa' in advance

Despite being 'out of the loop', you obviously bought very smartly in the first place as there isn't anything out there that will run Crysis any faster that what you have currently.

Turn down the AA & Post Processing, and wait 6 months for the 9800 series from NVidia :)

You might need the Tuiniq Tower for the quad core, if you overclock it.

I'd have to agree with melbourne720, there isn't anything that will hugely make a difference you can buy because that is already a pretty decent system, any further improvements (apart from possibly quad core) won't give you a great return for the money spent. :)

Cheers guys, really appreciate it. A quad core it is then! :)

Any advice on a decent screen to go with this lot? Am leaning towards either a 2407WFP-HC or a 226BW, unless you lot suggest different.

I'm afraid I don't know all that much about monitors but have a quick scan through the monitors sub-forum, the folks in there know their stuff. There is a fairly cheap 24" OcUK monitor that seems pretty good as well to perhaps give you another choice. :)

Samsung 226BW all the way. Very nice monitor and good value for the specs you get. You wouldn't regret getting it, although if you want slightly cheaper at the same specs, the LG aint too bad. I just prefer the looks of the Samsung! :D
