I'm new to overclocking and would like some advice on the system I am putting together please. I have read around the forums and come up with the following spec but suggestions would be great.
I haven't selected a hard disk yet as I have a raptor 37 gig. I could either buy another one of these and go the raid route or ditch it completely and get something better. I would like to overclock the CPU to 3 GHz.

Thanks in advance.

Replace the RAM with the Geil in This Week Only. It'll perform the same but is cheaper. Replace the PSU with the Corsair HX 520. It'll do a great job and is cheaper. Using the money you just saved, get a Tuniq Tower to cool the CPU.

The current king of gigabytes per pound is the 500 GB Western Digital AAKS model. It's quite fast. If you're looking for something smaller Seagate's 250 GB 7200.10 is very fast as it's a single-platter drive. A pair of them in a striped RAID would be nice.

The Q6600 won't take the FSB to DDR2-800 speeds until it's running at 3.6 Ghz. That's waaaay up there. Sufice it to say that the RAM will be underclocked most of its life. As such, yes, IMO it will perform identically.

Thanks very much.. I have changed the CPU Cooler around as suggested and the ram. I went with a 74 gig raptor in the end beause i really want speed and could buy another in future for raiding.

What would you suggest for the OS? I'm currently using XP.

Thanks very much for all your advice. I have ordered everything and it is due tommorrow.
Then the fun starts coz I aint got a clue how to overclock. ;)

So theres not really much point in getting 1066mhz ram then at this point in time, and you'd just be wasting your money??

I'm back, ;)

My first problem : I have built 2 of the above specced machines using vista 64 as the OS. They both have 2900 pros but one is a powercolor and one a sapphire. I used the drivers that came with the powercolor to test and the latest from ATI for the sapphire. Neither of them have the overdrive option in the CCC. I have tried clearing drivers on both machines and re-installing but just can't get it to show. Trawled the net for the last 2 days looking for an answer to no avail. Any ideas please as ATI Tool doesn't like working under vista 64 without a hell of a lot of messing because of unsigned kernal drivers.

Prob 2 : Not really a problem I just don't really know what I'm doing to overclock the cpu. I have turned off C1E, TM2 and CPU EIST Function in advance because I seem to remember reading somewhere this has to be done first. I know that everyones hardware is different but I don't want to push it too far, just maybe to 3.2 or 3.4. Can someone give me the settings to achieve this or maybe point me to a complete noob guide.

Thanks very much

Just found the answer to the catalyst overdrive problem by reading thru the forums here. It's because I don't have an 8 pin power going into it just 2*6's.

Off to fix that ;) now I just need to find an answer to overclock the cpu :)
