Advice on what to upgrade and what to upgrade to

So I built my PC about 6 years ago, I went for a fairly decent build back then as I wanted to use VR and had the Rift with it.

These are some of the components currently in my PC

Gigabyte Z370 AORUS Gaming 3 Intel Z370 (Socket 1151) DDR4 ATX Motherboard

Intel Core i5-8600K 3.6GHz (Coffee Lake) Socket LGA1151 Processor - OEM

Gigabyte Aorus GeForce GTX 1080TI 11264MB GDDR5X PCI-Express Graphics Card

750W PSU

32gb ram

So now I have an Occulus Quest 3 and play mainly sim racing games in VR. I think it may be time I considered getting a more up-to-date graphics card if nothing else.

Can my motherboard and CPU work with a more up-to-date GPU and if so which would be the best choice, I don't want the latest and greatest but something that will work well for a couple of years, that is a reasonably good upgrade.

Is my CPU getting old and needing replacing?

Anything else I should consider, I am trying to keep cost as low as I can.

Appreciate any advice, I have not kept up with stuff the last 5 years so any help would be great.

Yes, they can, though a BIOS update for the best compatibility is not a bad idea.

The 1080 Ti is around the level of a 6600/6650 XT, so to make it worthwhile ideally I wouldn't want less than a 7800 XT or 4070. You can also get a 6800 non-XT around £400, which would be a decent uplift, though not spectacular. FYI: AMD's VR performance varies depending on codecs 'n stuff, so you might want to check which cards are suitable for your gear.

If you decide that it has to be nvidia, then the improved Super cards are supposed to be due..., soon?

In short: yes. The 8600K performs very similar to the 9600K, so this video is relevant to you:

Depending on the resolution/settings you're using, it might not be a big bottleneck, but I'd definitely be prepared to upgrade it, if the graphics card doesn't give you the benefit you're looking for.
