Hi All,

I have an Asus ROG Maximus Hero VIII Z170 mobo and already have two Samsung SSD drives; a 250GB and 500GB connected via SATA. I've almost ran out of space on both of these and am looking for whether to buy another 1TB Samsung SSD SATA or an M.2 drive. I have little to no knowledge of M.2 drives so looking for some advice as to whether to go for one of these or just a regular SATA SSD. Any advice really appreciated.

Cheers
Daz

What are you planning on using it for? the SN570 is a pretty standard recommendation, it is PCI-E 3.0, uses TLC memory in all capacities, has 5 year warranty, performs well (for a DRAM less drive) and is fairly cheap.

I'm not sure I'd trust the Samsung drives right now, since there are reports that they're starting to suffer from the same issues as the 870 Evo (the updated 970 Evo Plus and the 980 Pro, haven't heard anything about the plain 980).

You can use lowest slot for PCIe SSDs with these kind adapters.

What are the reports of the 970 Evo Plus and 980 Pro? I'm slightly worried, as I have a 970 Evo Plus as my main OS drive.

A defective 870 Evo shows bad blocks, reserved blocks being consumed and ECC uncorrectable errors, usually prior to 10TB written. The 970 Evo Plus (I think only the new version, not the one with the original controller and flash) and 980 Pro appear to have the same problem (maybe because the 128 layer flash is not particularly reliable, who knows), but it is less common than with the 870 Evo.

I got a pcie4 sn770 2tb yesterday for the same price as a 2tb pcie3 drive, but I was lucky and got a 1 day only deal. They've come down a lot recently.
