Hi everyone.

I am looking at getting a new headset (see link- http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?groupid=702&catid=1058&subid=692 )
Although i am unsure which one!
I have the Logitech G9x mouse and the G19 Keyboard and wouldn't mind completeing the set with the G35 headset, but im not to keen on the USB part, unless i am being stupid, some of the reviews say that in Vista you need to change the sound settings each time you want to listen to them or speakers?

Ideas please please please

I use a USB head set and it is the best investment ever!

All you have to do it plug it in and it will install the drivers, then set the device as a default. This will make the device default when plugged in, once you remove it, your sound will default to your speakers again.

usb headsets are awesome. other than the above posts pros u can also set up different programs to use different soundcard i.e. have ur mp3's playing through ur speakers through normal pc soundcard and ur game / voice comms coming through your headset through its built in sound card. Been doing this for years with sennheisers (and an old plantronics)

Second this and just to add i would never get a standard audio jack headset again!

get a decent sound card and stereo headphones instead... usb headsets are not worth it, just like 5.1 headphones.

Sound from a soundcard will be much clearer and nicer than using drivers... and the soundcard will have either cmss-3d or dolby headphone which will give you the 'surround sound' feeling on stereo headphones.

If you are looking for sound quality... then definately soundcard+headphones is the way to go

I currently have a sennheiser head set running from the sound card that came with my rampage formula MOBO (& also have a creative titanium card spare), and the sound quality is amazing, but i want surround sound also, i like my current headset (cant remember the model number) quality is great, but not what i am after when playing the likes of COD4, WAW, MW2 etc etc, when sound matters most.
I have had USB headsets b4, but only budget ones, even they were good, but the Logitech G35's look gorgeous, only problem being that in one of the reviews from the link i posted says that you have to keep changing the sound card properties as vista doesnt always recognise these particular ones.
I am only after new ones for gaming only.

D2 or D2X, same card, one's PCI other's PCIE, offers both DTS and Dolby tech, whereas the Xonar DS is just DTS. The D2/X offers better circuitry, so in theory should provide a better sound. Gaming with headphones or headset, steer clear of the DS. It's a good card for what it is, but for anyone looking for positional sound with headphones/set, the DS does not offer anything. The D2/X has Dolby Headphone, which Nameless was referring to, good for movies aswell as gaming.

Really the DX would be a better card to compare to the D2/X, as it also has Dolby tech, but it doesn't have DTS. DTS is only of use if you are connecting an AV receiver. D2/X also has digital in, which would be useful for recording from a digital source. Again, no use if you have need for that feature.

If you are going to connect analogue speakers, then with the D2/X, you are paying for features you will not use.

If you're on a budget like I was I highly recommend either the D1 or DX (depending on whether you want PCI or PCI-E). The amount of features they each have and the sound quality they deliver is such good value for money compared to the Creative cards, to me it really is a no brainer. Plus the drivers in Vista/Win 7 are much better in my experience over the Creative card drivers as well.

from my opening post, anyone have any views on which one of those is better?
Am also upgrading to Windows 7 ultimate when i can be bothered to install it and all my stuff again!

If it's for gaming, I'm sorry I can't recommend the goldring DR150. I bought them to replace my Icemat Siberia and the audio positioning in games was nowhere near as accurate. Don't get me wrong, the Goldring DR150 is a good pair of headphones, with GOOD sound quality in games, movies and music. But for playing games competitively I found them useless. So for that reason, I'd have to go with the Sennheiser HD555 as best all round headphones.
