hi all

tis my first post but have been reading these forums for over a year so i know i can get sound advice for hear..

well 3 years ago i built an uber pc i was the envy of all my m8's the beast in question was..

2.8 barton core
1.5g ram
160g hdd
5800ut 256mb
asus mobo..

dont sound much these days but back in the day things were diffrent as u may well know lol..
over the years my little barton core and i have endured a lot of upgrades mobs, gfx cards ect.. and i have kinda grow to love this little chip ( i know love of an inanimate object isnt quite rite but i have a bird so its not all that bad lol) back to the point.. as my love for this chip has limmited my upgrades im still using almost retro parts.. unfortunatly as with every thing in life things dnt last forever! and my mobo has died.... obviously socket a is also dead and so...

i have had to buy some new parts..

iv gone for price/performance.. and so have just bought

4000+ 939 2.4g i know this is a pretty good chip very over clockable as i belive its similar to the fx56 if im not mistaken and it only cost £60

dfi ultra d 939 mobo £75

i think thats £135 well spent.. im now looking to buy a gfx card for around £200 give or take £30

iv seen a bfg 7950gt on hear for £200 an odd clock speeds look pretty good and 512mb ram pretty standard these days but that cant harm..

well my question really is is this a good card would u if in my boot buy somthing else around that price... im also looking for some good ram as my current ram is some ***** adata pc 3200 4oomhz HIGH lag ram ;) 1.5 g of it but im pretty sure that 512 of g skill would kick its **** lol. anyhow i thought id make the mose of a year with out posting as u can see be my novel...

any feed back will be greatly appreciated.. many thanks *apac*

just to let you know, edit the sweary before a mod sees it, they wont be to impressed.

i'll advise you to 'spend a penny, save a penny' buy an Allendale core 2 duo, and a corresponding motherboard, its more money now, but will save another upgrade in the not to distant future ;)

ok it is quite an old chip but lets face it its more then capable.. 2.4ghz clockable to 3ghz.. for £60.. thats why its uber.. why pay 4x more for what im gunna use it for.. anyway slightly adrift from my questions..

Hi Apac - I reckon going on price/performance, go for the brand new ATi X1950 Pro - cheaper this week too! OK so it doesnt quite have the raw horsepower of the X1900XT but is slightly cheaper to buy and will use a whole heap less power, so should strain your PSU less. (Dunno what ** using)

Yes the 7950GT is obviously an extremely good card, but if youre using the argument of not buying 100% top flight kit then dont spend too much on GFX as this value will rapidly drop - save the cash in the kitty to put toward another card in 6-9 months.

As for the RAM, id advise checking out exactly what your current RAM latencies are - CPU-ID should help with this, and ask a more specific RAM question in that forum -there are much more learned chaps and chapesses than I on such matters.
