hey

its finally time to upgrade my increasingly creaky setup, I'm currently running a AMD 3700+ with 1gb ram on an asus a8n sli se board. 80gb hdd, for graphics i have a galaxy 7900gt 256mb, this i intend to re-use ( unless i can be persuaded otherwise;) )

I'm probably gonna game a bit more this time round ( fps type stuff.. driving stuff )

anyway, this is what i'm looking at getting

get the samsung F1 320GB, i got one recently and im very happy :D

and id prob say to get the 520w corsair modular

If you're building a new gaming rig I'd avoid P35, doesn't support PCI-E v2 so for the newer cards won't be as fast

find me a link that shows it makes any difference

If you want a nice quiet PC get an aftermarket fan. You're not going to need anywhere near 650w, I think you should get the 520w for cable tidiness should you choose to o/c.

EDIT: For motherboard I think you should choose a P43 for PCI Express 2.0

If you're doing any modern gaming then it's best off to replace the 7900GT, midrange GPU's are a steal these days. Just ask for some advice as the pricing is a little crazy at the moment. Good cards are in some cases cheaper than average cards in the 50 - 100 range due to some clearance deals going on.

Which OS are you planning to use... 4GB seems a little OTT for general use.. and a 450w Corsair would be fine unless you're planning SLI.

Great case... used one couple of weeks back. Removing the filter to clean it is a fiddle.. better just to hoover in in situ!

Are you planning to overclock the CPU or run at stock ?

If you're building a new rig I'd buy 4GB, probably going Vista 64. 7900GT is a bit pants as said already, I'd get something higher than 450W though.

The 450w corsair will handle a quad and a GTX280 ....

There's a lot of FUD about PSU's back from the old days... eg the 580W hiper stumped up 360w @ 12v which is quite poor as a percentage output so GPU manufactures state minimum 500w to ensure there is plenty of 12v power available.

The corsair VX450is rated at 396W @ 12v which is plenty for most systems.

I have a second PC with a C2d @ 3Ghz and 2900XT running on an Antec Earthwatts 380w.

However it's the OP's cash.... just don't get too carried away buying power you'll never use.

will be using xp32 for a bit then looking at vista or newer in the future, having used vista a few times recently I cant say im that impressed.

Forgot to mention, im currently running my setup in an antec sonata II with the 450w psu, my reason for upgrading that was its now pushing 3 years old and i reasoned it might be worth upgrading/replacing it.

Anybody shed any light on the mobo? Should i stick with p35 or should i spend a bit extra and go newer?

Will almost definitley be overclocking...:D

Nice spec. I would get a modular PSU though, the unused cables really are a pain in the ****. Stick with the three hundred too as it's a lovely case :) I hear good things about western digital hard-drives also. I would go with 4gb :)

fair point... but considering i will likely upgrade to a new os in the nearish future would i not be better getting ram now?

nah even with Vista 64 memory usage was 800MB in idle, so another 1.2GB for progs is plenty. Certainly 1GB isn't recommended unless it's for a basic PC, but not windows IMO (Linux is fine for 1GB)
