Advice please

Hmmm, well if anything hardware related had actually 'broken' it wouldn't work at all, I think with an absolutely clean Windows install, not an OEM image restore job, it would be fine.

I know your trying to help :) and I would rather her save her money but if I cant get her laptop to run nicely for her I rather her have a mac than getting a call all the time saying I am fed up with it etc etc...

Think i going to get it off her tmr and see what I can do with it..

Fair enough then. If it makes life easier and her happier and gives you less of a headache, then go for it :) ...I like the Macbook Pro, the 13" base model is a really nice machine.

It certainly will give me less headache ha ha... But like you said I think I am going to have a final attempt and getting it running nicely and teach her what to do if I cant get it running nicely then off to apple store meadowhall and get her a mac

It's easy enough to stop a Windows system going slow and rubbish. My family use an old Shuttle with an AMD 3200+ or something like that with a couple of gig in it.

It's running Vista and because of that they quite simply can't install any rubbish into it. Previous to that they've been running XP and have always managed to install stuff which in turn just slows everything down. With Vista, I have the only administrator account and they can't install anything without my permission because of UAC.

Previously I had to rebuild it every six months or so under XP. It's been running Vista for nearly 18 months now and it's as zippy as when it was first installed.

People knock Vista, I never had a single issue with it and it's saved me a lot of problems.

You're right on the money. Bottom end 13" MacBook. If you can get her to swing for the unibody, she won't regret it (Although make it clear that the only reason is that it looks a million times nicer! ;)). Otherwise the old white plastic one will do her dandy.

For what she does she could use an Atom based netbook!

Even an entry level macbook is overkill on spec for web, email and letters.

I only got my parents an Imac as they wanted to do video conferencing with a friend that has a macbook and would be quickest way of getting them up and running.

Just avoid the bloat like, Norton and Office 2007, stick with something like Avast as nice and lightweight and free for home use.

I'm willing to bet that it's a Celeron, if it's not and turns out to be a Core 2 Duo then it's probably got a terribly slow hard drive in. Swap this out and install from a clean image (not an OEM restore disc) and you should be fine.

I bought my first macbook 3 years ago. I sold it last year because I wanted the ability to have 4 Gb of RAM, and bought another macbook with a 320Gb 7200 rpm hard drive. Both have been excellent with no problems. I have some Windows only software, so I use Windows XP, Vista, 2000 and Windows 7 under Parallels and VM Fusion.

Macs tend to hold their value quite well. I paid £600 for my first macbook, and sold it for £400 2 years later without any problem.
