Advice please...

It's taken nvidia two generations to catch up on AMDs eyefinity or in laymans terms, 3 screens from a single GPU. AMD have dropped their prices and give away the games to stay competitive, no shame in taking advantage of them ;)

I miss the mouse gestures in the old nvidia drivers, if anyone remembers them :'(

But still no PhysX for Ati though, adds nice atmosphere to the top end games... like Metro 2033.

Well there is a difference in anandtech, but yeah I agree that drivers vary..

I was speaking on my past experience didnt think AMD would change its ways in drivers department.

The 7850s overclock extremely well which is why they have been THE default choice for a midrange GPU since release. The benchmark above is done at stock speed (860mhz), they are known to exceed 1000mhz ;)

Very few games use PhysX, you would think sims like FSX would use it but it doesn't.

When 7850 was released 660 wasnt though... 7850 against 560ti is a simple choice... But 660 was made to combat 7850?? :)

We spec custom rigs here fella, I'm not a fan boi. Each persons needs are different. If the OP does a lot of video editing/encoding then you could argue CUDA support would be handy. Some games flatout prefer nvidia, such as FSX which we have discussed on a recent thread.

I have a feeling you would spec/prefer the 660Ti if you could but at that price you might as well have the AMD 7950 which is cheaper and cop the games too if the rig is mostly for gaming ;)

Will play the odd game on it but mostly do my gaming on Xbox these days. The pc is for general use, internet, docs, music the occasional game perhaps which is why I can't fully rule out just putting an extra 2gb in the existing pc, although it does seem to be showing its age & chunking along a bit.

You wont believe the difference between the PC and Xbox certainly with the 7850 GPU as a minimum. I can only bring myself to play the xbox to do some drifting on Forza, simply because it's not on PC.

Idlemans spec is similar to my post #13 but a little more. He changed the PSU and added a nice aftermarket heatsink, which is on offer to help overclock the CPU if you wanted to. Get's a thumbs up from me if you want to spend the little extra. Remember to use your free P&P though.....tut tut idleman ;)

No plans to overclock & nvida Vs Amd I guess is swings & roundabouts really, both good & both better at different things.

So am I right in thinking a 500w psu is more than enough for whats been listed above?

Yeah or the corsair 550W I used. Either or is ample for a single GPU setup. We are using modular PSUs which helps the airflow in the case as you only use the cables you need, all the "extras" can be left in the box ;)

Nope, I would pick 7950 for myself, its cheaper, similair performance level, 3gb VRAM is always good and you do get free games which is nice, but I mean I wouldnt mind using either tbh in a spec for someone... those are quite high end cards and physX is a nice feature in top end games, and CUDA support is also appealing but I dont really make much use of PhysX or CUDA so for me 7950 would be better.
