I'm looking to replace my current h/d that has my XP install on to something that's faster.

Now I've done some research and the Seagate 7200.10 series seem to be the drive that's recommended performance wise, but as per here(3rd paragraph down), http://tomshardware.co.uk/2007/01/16/2007-hdd-rundown_uk/page18.html , they recommend a Western Digital Caviar SE WD1600AAJS as it's a single platter drive.

So, which one should I go for?

Drive size isn't an issue(ie don't need any extra storage space)and I can't afford a Raptor :(

Cheers, dagwoood.

I think that WD drive is the smaller brother of the 500Gb one which is on special here (only for a couple of hours more though) and it's turning in some decent speeds from what I can see. With that and the new Hitachi T7K1000s coming soon I think that the advantage the Seagate had is being eroded and the choice isn't as clear as it once was. The WD has a 3 year warranty against the 5 years provided by Seagate but you'll need to spend an extra tenner to get the smallest Seagate (200Gb) rather than the 160Gb WD.

Which to go for then? Difficult choice and a lot of it has to do with personal experience of the brand, I've have never had a Seagate fail on me whereas I've had a few WDs die on me. However there will be people who've had the opposite experience.
