Advice? Upgraded GFX Card, but still lacking performance...

Hey guys,

I recently upgraded my GFX card from the Ge-Force GTX460 to MSI Radeon HD7870 2Gb.

I installed and updated to the latest drivers (V.13.251.0.0) but have not noticed much improvement. On playing DayZ (Standalone, Alpha) On Highest Res I'm only averaging 30-40 FPS, even when upping the power in MSI Afterburner. (I was achieving around 30FPS with my old GTX460)

I then uninstalled all previouse drivers for the old card and upgraded the Power Supply from my 450w to 600w but am still only getting around 30-40 FPS.

My GF was very excited about the upgrade as she'd recently bought every Sims 3 expansion, but we were both disapointed to find only a similar performance to the GTX460. Still quite jumpy when panning camera, zooming in and out etc.

I ran some Mark3D Benchmarking and the results (and my spec) can be seen here: http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/2128801

A friend who has the card below mine seems to have accumulated a higher score than me...

Any suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong, anything I may have missed or anything I can do to help improve the performance would be REALLY appreciated.

Your CPU's not very good.

What motherboard do you have?

Overclocking it is probably the quickest/easiest way assuming you can, but an FX4100 isn't what I'd consider a CPU I want in a gaming build.

cpu plus dayz is arma based which is not good optimization wise and your fps is right for that game. aslong as you keeping above 30 fps you fine.

DayZ (and the Arma II engine it's built on) is massively CPU limited. I've got a 2500k and recently got an ATI 280x and in the centre of Elektro I still only get 30ish FPS.

See what your FPS is like in the more remote areas on DayZ and more importantly, in other games and benchmarks.

Edit: Just noticed you've already tested and benched. Yep, new CPU time I reckon.

My Mobo is ASUSTeK Computer INC. M5A78L-M LX - Any recommendations for a decent, but low priced upgrade compatable with my Mobo?

Again, excuse my lack of tech knowledge; Why would you not recommend putting anything else in? I'm not using any cooling other than standard fans.

It's a very basic board and has 4+1 VRAM's and no VRAM's heatsinks etc, if you whacked in one of the 8 cores the power draw would probably result in throttling.

You could probably get away with an FX6300, no overclocking, but you're only guaranteed the core for core performance increase which isn't all that.

You mean overclock my current CPU or upgrade to the 6300 and OC that?

As far as cooling goes, again - I'm no pro! Do you mean just more fans, or? Not too sure how cooling works / how to upgrade it?

Appreciate your patients

I mean getting a new heatsink/fan combo and overclocking the FX4100.

I'd wait off and save more money before upgrading CPU (As you're likely going to require a new board)

And thanks for the video Joel, my brother would be interested in it too as he plays the game.

Save up £200

Sell your current cpu and mobo to add extra funds

But a 8320 and a new mobo and 4gig of extra ram to go with it for around £200-£240

this is the minimum upgrade i'd make in your shoes or its not worth it

Any recommendations for a fairly decent, low cost fan / heatsink combo?

Thanks a66as - Will try overclocking and if still not up to scratch, look's like I'll have to start saving.
