Guys,

Can anyone tell me if this lot is a good combination:

Abit IP35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £82.24

Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail £159.79

OcUK 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-8500C5 1066MHz Dual Channel Kit £58.74

Yes I changed the mem to the geil and its cheaper as well.

Anything else you might think I'll need, like a heatsink, cooler etc?

(In reply to the heatsink/cooler question) Depends whether you plan to overclock it or not. The retail edition comes with a cooler/heatsink so if you're going to leave it at stock and in a case with half-decent airflow, you shouldn't have much problem.

However if you do plan to clock it, go for the OEM version (to save you a bit of cash) and get an aftermarket cooler. Everybody on here swears by the Tuniq Tower but I don't find the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro to be that bad. I suppose it depends on how much cash you want to spend :)

(And for the mobo question) Well apart from price, and even though I'm not that knowledgable when it comes to Abit boards, the pro version is likely to be more stable if you overclock your system, and from what I can see it also supports dual gfx cards (although only crossfire, as i read somewhere that the P35 chipset doesn't support SLI or something, Not sure if that's true or not though). Oh and it seems to support eSata as well, but I don't know many people that use that funciton anyway.

as for the Pro it has 2 GFX card slots if later you want add a GFX card, think crossfire is ok with this board, SLI not for sure
 
Well I dont plan on overclocking as its fast enough for me anyway better than my current setup.

I plan to use my current case, 400 watt supply and my Sapphire Radeon X1600 Pro card, it will do me for now.

The only concern I have is will the nobo run the following:

2X IDE drives
1X dvd writer
1X cd writer

My current board has 2 IDE slots, this mobo has only got one so I need a card of sorts, any ideas?

Most boards have only one IDE connector anymore. I asume that the IDE connectors are for the DVD writer and cd writer correct ?

If this the case not better to upgrade to the DVD writer sata drive?
 
If I get a sata drive, then Im loosing 2 large drives and thats more cost again. Think I'll get a card of sorts so I can run the addition ide items.

Any ideas on a card?
 
That setup sems fine. Like Gunther said though you'll find it difficult these days to find a modern mobo with more than one IDE slot on it. It might be better, as Gunther also suggested, to just get a new SATA cd/dvd writer, as they're only like £20, and it means you can still use your two older hard drives
 
Yes but I have one drive connected to a writer in series, therefore I need 2 IDE connectors.

One drive + One writer = One IDE Connector
One drive + One writer = One IDE Connector

Thats 2.

So if I use one thats on the mobo and get a card to run the other.

This will go into my old case, hope all the above is compatable.

The Graphics card is a Sapphire Radeon X1600 Pro, will do me for now because Im not a big gamer.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh...........

Just received my bits and bobs, stripped PC down and on instaling my AGP graphics card I find that this mobo ASUS P5K AiLifestyle Series iP35 Socket 775 eSATA 8channel Audio ATX Motherboard has no AGP slot?

Any ideas why or have i cocked up.

Erm well that motherboard doesn't have an AGP slot, there are hardly any motherboards that do. I guess we all assumed that the gfx card you had was pci-express, as that's the only type of graphics card that'll fit in your rig. You could sell that X1600 that you've had for a while and get an equally good or better graphics card for the same price.

Someone would have probably said somethin if you woulda said you had an AGP gfx card lol :)
