Basically my current contract should have ended at the end of January - but it got extended until the end of February, then March.

I currently work in Liverpool but my brother-in-law has got me a job at the Coop in Manchester. It's 19.5k as apposed to my current 12k and is doing help desk stuff (retail) as apposed to admin work, however there is a massive IT dept at my current job - so there is room to move and it's much closer (10 miles as apposed to 20).

Now the job in Manchester is 6:00am - 11:00pm shift/rota. I would need to buy a car etc - which is OK but I haven't driven since I passed (4 years ago) and I'm a bit uncomfortable with driving so early.

Now if my contract ends at the end of March and I need a new job - fair cop I'll just look.

This may seem like an obvious choice to most of you - but it's quite hard for me.

My parents have advised me to stay where I am as transport alone may cancel out the extra money.

A jump from 12k to 19.5k is quite a good jump tbh. And I doubt having a car, driving the extra 10 miles, would cancel out the extra 7.5k.

Also, the company you are at, will they defo keep you on come March? if you have no guarantee then i'd take the job with your brother in law. Put yourself first, don't hold out until 'what could be' if you have been offered a good job, good money, then take it.

An extra 10 miles is nothing, after transport you'll still be up 6k a year.

I imagine the Coop has an IT department too.

The real question for me is do you want helpdesk work? It may be more stressful than admin.

Well I have my degree and I kinda want to go into tech support. I know the Coop have an IT dept as that's where I'm going :p

However the extra money will soon dwindle as - £200PM train costs (traffic would be horrendous in normal hours!), insurance, petrol, student loan will soon add up.

It's a toughy and there are no guarantees that I will be kept on at the end of March.

Edit:I'm based in St.Helens.

If you stay on 12k, you will still have student loans, and still have a small travel cost.

You'll be approx £400ish better off a month, after tax.

I'd go for it, because March might come, your current employee won't keep you on, and you'll be struggling to find work, with everything thats going off.

Take it :D

You don't start pay off your loan until you earn over 15-6k anyway IIRC.

Although obviously I will have to start paying it someday.
