I've been looking at camera's for god know's how many days and I still can't make up my mind! Can you help?

Recently I've found my love for photography again and I currently own a 500D with the standard kit lens, I got the 55-200 as a gift but soon sold this as it just gathered dust.

My favourite type of photography is landscape, skylines etc and also a bit of event stuff for work, so I was looking at wide-angle lenses for the Canon but I'd to go more compact, I find the 500D a bit of a burden to carry around as I like to travel light.

So that got me looking into more compact cameras, and i like the look of the NEX-6 and also noticed they do a 10-18 f4 lens and the reviews and results look pretty good (i think?). Should also compliment the 16-50 kit lens well.

Am I wasting my time going from the 500D to the NEX-6?

Will the picture quality be better or worse?

I just don't want to regret selling the 500D and buying a NEX-6 and thinking I should have just bit the bullet and gone full frame and got a 6D or the like and dealt with the size.

Thanks!

It depends on finances really, as it's a pain in the rear to buy something and realise you wanted to go the other way. I've seen some massive bargains on the RX100 recently, but I think that was only B&H in the US.

Depending on funds you could go full frame. 2nd hand 5dmkII maybe? You don't need full frame for landscapes, but obviously the better the camera the less likely the need to upgrade in the immediate future.

Everyone bangs on about the 10-20 on crop sensor cameras, and the 17-40L. Personally I started out about 8 years ago with the 300D, kit lens and 70-300APO from Sigma. Then I got the 12-24 from Sigma for landscapes, typically around the time I lost interest in landscapes and photography.

Basically have a good think about what you want to do. If you've still got the 500D and you're not 100% dedicated, then have a look on MPB for second hand lenses to save yourself a few quid :)

Thanks ElDude,

Thinking about getting the Canon 10-22 second hand and giving it ago before I purchase a new camera

Would like something more compact though!

I've checked MPB a few times and tbh I've found their prices quite disappointing! Nonetheless, I did purchase one lens from them and found a minor issue with it. It doesn't stop it from working but it definitely wasn't reported.

The lens in question just happens to be the Canon 10-22mm so it's a good job it works fine! I quite enjoy using it but not just for landscapes, good for buildings/architecture too and can be handy to get a crowd into shot if you're close :) They might not appreciate being distorted into looking fat though ;)

Definitely agree with having a think about what you want to achieve first before you start buying stuff... Unless you happen to be rich ;)

A DSLR isn't compact but then again it will get decent shots.
