Hi so after selling off my old build I'm currently in the process of picking up parts for my new build trouble is I'm kinda stuck with what chip to go for so a little help please!

Option A) I can go 8700k build.

or

Option B) Looking on the MM/ known auction site pick up an older 6700k/7700k and motherboard for the price of the 8700k chip alone.

Option C) Ryzen

Whatever route I go the chip will be in a gaming rig, running a 27' 144hz@ 1440p monitor. Thankyou for reading any advice is welcome :)

Any idea of when info will be available for Ice Lake? I just don't want to get stuck in the whole see what's happening in 6 month cycle.

Can you hold off?

How long for? I was planning on purchasing start of Febuary.

You could always go for an AM4 board now and a cheap Ryzen and upgrade just CPU when needed - AM4 will be around for a while.

Or just go for TR 1900X - that will be beasty PC and play games for a few years, probably lots of years if you went 1920X or 1950X

I thought threadripper was more overkill for gaming, as for Am4 I thought the 8700k for gaming would be better than say a 1700/1800? I'm no fanboy so open to the idea of Amd

I wouldn't bother with anything currently given the recent security flaw. The next round of cpus will be pretty big and AMD could gain real traction with a well clocked and priced 8 core in April.

It will take some time for Intel to sort out it's CPU's, but Ryzen+ will be with us in April. TBH I'd go with a 1900X and some fancy B-Die RAM.

If I went for Am4 what would the refresh bring on that socket? I'm just looking at keeping costs down I never realised how much moving to 1440p would be.

Oh it ain't cheap!
Do you already have a gpu?

I got nothing apart from a case and power supply, its literally a new build I'm even getting a new desk :D that's why I even suggested getting an older I7 to keep costs down. I am weighing up the whole 1080p@ 144hz and 1440p@144hz as graphics card and monitor prices to complement each other are insane

If anyone can say how well Ryzen performs in games I’m certainly open to Am4 I know that both intel an Amd chips like fast ram so the savings will be on what I go for chip wise.
