Hi All, I am looking to buy a new PC shortly and need to buy a GFX card that will play WoW at close to max settings @ 1680x1050 resolution. Just so it will last me until the 65nm ATI 2900 refresh comes and ill reconsidering buying a top of the range card then.

Thanks in advance

x1950 pro = bang for buck, or maybe 2600xt/8600gt.

I don't remember WoW being exactly graphically demanding when I played it.

The X800XT is not that bad, i dont think you can find a cheap replacement while you wait for your upgrade.

You wont see much improvement with the 2600 PRO.

There isn't a 65nm 2900 refresh coming, ATi's next cards are not due till next year (around January) and will be 55nm, id get the x1950pro as its an absolute bargain right now at £76 all in, and is about double the performance of your x800 XT, if not more.

so a 256mb X1950 pro better than a 512 mb 2600 xt?

Im trying to google around for some benchmarks in WoW as that is the game i play 99% of the time. But unfortunately as someone mentioned its not gfx intensive so not many people use it as a benchmark.

I also read that the X1950 struggles at 1600x1200 res to use AA will the 2600 fair any better as it has double the ram. (i seem to recall ram being much more important in high res and with AA)

Yes.

The 2600 series (and also nvidia's 8600 series) are pretty awful cards.

I would go for either the x1900pro or a 7900GT. These will offer a much better price : performance ratio.

considering you have an older cpu, i would suggest that realistically speaking the x1950pro is the highest card you will get sufficient performance from, without it suffering from CPU lag. It will still be hindered a little, but it really is the best card for you as a stop gap.

hmm i just re-read your post and thinking about it Jan 08. So add in a very possible delay of a month then it could be 6-7 months. Maybe ill get a 8800 GTS 320mb ^_^

AND now i look at OcUK site and they only have 1 8800 GTS cheaper versions left then its the 211+. And then paying 211 for a GTS i might as well get a 2900 for 230.

I think im slowly talking myself into spending more and more money lol ;)

Oh @Scougar sorry forgot to mention in OP that i was buying a complete new computer. Atm im on AGP so there is no real worth upgrading. SO i have been waiting since 12/2006 for a good time to upgrade. I missed the Duo 6600 sweet period, so now its Q6600 sweet period im gonna strike like a cobra!

You can get the 640mb GTS for the same price as the 2900 so id get that (128mb more Ram), doesn't give out as much heat, is a lot quieter, and its less power hungry, you would have to make sure your PSU could power the 2900 as they need more than the GTX. :)

I'd look on the MM and try to get a 8800gts320 there
£140-150 atm
at least you won't loose so much come the upgrade next year ;)
