I just changed to the 3 network for the one package but signal is not great. They have offered me a signal+ box but that requires a phone line to work which defeats the object of cancelling my bt line. I have looked up mobile data repeaters and it appears although its legal to sell them in the uk its illegal to use them. So that's a weird predicament.

my other option is I noticed that there is a open network near me and if I go upstairs I can connect to it but it is very weak. Is there a device I can use just to pull the wifi signal in and to broadcast it around my house.

Any thought on either of the 2 above methods would be really appreciated.

Thanks Carl

A third thought can I use my bt router and instead of it connecting via the Ethernet cable to the landline socket is there a device like an ariel with the Ethernet connector end on that I can plug in the back to bring the wifi signal in ?

Any help out there .?

err are you asking if it's possible to extend someone else's insecure wifi signal around your flat / house?

Why would you cancel your landline internet if (as it seems from this thread) the ability to have a good connection at your house is important?

Because its too expensive and I got unlimited broadband with 3 on my mobile but have to go upstairs to get a signal hence exploring ways to bring either the mobile broadband or wifi into the downstairs. I have seen wifi antenna with 10 metre usb cable. If I put a ethernet to usb adapter to join it to my router, would it work?

I am paying for mobile broadband from 3 if you had bothered to read the thread rather than trying to be a wise guy put your brain to finding a solution. Been on here for several years and until now have met others just wanting to help others not to use the site to be stupid.

What do you want people to say? You live in an area with spotty mobile reception and don't want to pay for a landline. There's no magic bullet here.

There are always homebrew ways to tackle problems I will solve this one myself eventually. I thought the more heads giving ideas would help me solve this one quicker.

The other option is something like a CradlePoint 4G router that can connect to a mobile network and share it out over Wi-Fi / Ethernet. But for the £800 that costs you could get two years of Infinity.

How much effort are you wanting to sink into extending a barely-reachable BT hotspot that will give a terrible service and might go away next week?

Thanks Caged, yes 800 pounds is abit much. But really appreciated your idea. Solved the problem in the end. Here's what I did:

Get laptop, scan for wifi signal. Then plug in router via ethernet port. Then share network in win 8 and voila signal all over house :)
