Are bonus points gained on folding advmethods only if you are using a passkey and what kind of bonus is gained currently takes between 18-35 mins for most WUs

You need to use a passkey and to have successfully uploaded at least ten units (smp is fine) within the (preferred?) deadline.

The bonus is directly related to how fast you can do them. Dual processor mac pro's are loving them. Single socket i7 @ 4ghz can get through them in about two days, I was getting around 58k per unit with this. Next one is due in about 7 hours, so I'll know then if the point system has changed much.

I believe they're only viable on a 3ghz hyperthreaded quad core or better, when running linux. It's helpful if using 5gb of ram for it doesn't bother you as well. What OS and processor do you have in mind?

Wait.. advmethods is for "experimental" WUs... bigadv is for the HUGE WUs.. they're two different things.. which is the OP referring to?

And 18-35 minutes for a WHOLE WU? o.o

Unless I have missed another post of yours somewhere frozen I think you should post your specs and which client you are using!

I'm all

Oh. I really need to read posts more carefully. My response was aimed entirely at the bigadv units, not advmethods. The two are mutually exclusive.

Sorry :(

Currenly folding on an Eeepc701 (900-961mhz) and an advent laptop  as I just wanted to do my little bit to begin with (1.8 Celeron Core2) but I'm getting more and more interested and will be building rig soon to move this thing over to only being for portable use ( Im not the best at saving instead of wasting)

I was refering to advmethods rather than bigadv and SMP clients as I am already aware of the bonuses but wasnt sure if there would be any bonus mainly of the advent as usually runs 15-18 mins a frame ( should have mentioned per frame in OP aswell)

The rig will consist initially of

E1200 - already bought and hoping for 2.8-3ghz clocks
2GB Ram
8800 GT maybe 9600GX2
OCZ/Corsair PSU

Firstly I'll move from el cheapo case to CM-690 II Advanced as I adore this case and spotted it a while before release

I'll then expand the system over another month or so to bring in a Q6600 and a second Nvidia card.

Finally from there adding a water loop, possibly two loops if I can get blocks for the Graphics cards

As far as OS I'm open I have a reasonable knowledge of Ubuntu/Debian as I was using it for desktop use for 6-9 months, as well as running a dedicated webserver/ media stream server on CentOS

advmethods will work fine, almost impossible for me to give ppd for your rig as its so different from mine look at the calculator here: http://www.linuxforge.net/bonuscalc2.php
My Q9650 @ 4.0 WU 6012 gives a TPF of 4min 37 and a ppd of 8968 :)
The faster you complete the more ppd :)
Its upped my ppd by about 2k from VM notfreds :) :)

At 15 minutes per frame A3 units would barely get any bonus worth getting. So you should fold without -advmethods on the lappy.

For the E1200 it might be worth a go with -advmethods. My little rule of thumb is if you can crunch an A1 WU with 10 minutes per frame or less, you will probably be OK doing A3 WUs.

On my own system I found I fold an A1 at approximately half the speed of an A3. 6 minutes vs 3 minutes [give or take of course].

Anything less than 5 minutes per A3 frame and you should see some good bonus. More than 5 and you're starting to push it. 8 minutes puts you at roughly the same PPD as A1 units.

Not the most scientific reasoning ever, but works for me :p
