Adware?

Hi all.

I've got some kind of adware/virus on my computer. I think this is the first time I've ever had a virus so I'm not really sure what to do.

Basically whenever I go on the internet I get a barrage of new windows opening with random internet advertisements on. This is regardless of what website I am viewing. I get a new pop up probably once every minute.

First thing I did was download the latest version of Spybot S&D as well as AdAware. I updated both with the latest definitions and scanned the entire system with both. I also have nod32 which I also updated and ran a scan of the entire system.

All 3 of them reported some kind of issue. I'm afraid I can't remember the exact names off the top of my head, I thought I wouldn't need to as it'd solve my problems:o.

After doing this and a reboot I tried the web again but still had issues.

I ran nod32 again which found no errors. I then ran Spybot which did find some errors:

Virtumonde.dll (2 entries-Trojans)
Virtumonde (3 entries-Trojans)

Running AdAware also found some kind of Trojan but can't remember the name of it atm (don't have time to run it again now, will edit this post later with name).

After supposedly "removing" them I was still having problems so tried running both the apps in safe mode to see if that made a difference but it didn't.

I downloaded HiJackthis so I could post that on here but whenever I click 'analyze this' after doing the scan it crashes so can't do that either:mad:.

The only positive note is that I thought the problem may only be with IE7 so i downloaded firefox and its working with no popups:).

However I would prefer to use IE and would definitely like to remove these trojans as they're bugging me and am worried about entering any passwords etc while I still have them.

Sorry for the long post but thanks very much for any advice on what to do now.

(Don't want to format either, will be doing this around xmas so want to hang on til then really!)

Been a while since I last used HijackThis, but don't you click the 'Do a system scan and save a logfile' option?

Should appear in Notepad at the end? - isn't the 'Analyze This' option to send it to some website that automates the 'trawling through' the log file to see what it can suggest?

Are you at least able to get the Notepad logfile up?

*EDIT* - A quick google for virtumonde and virtumonde.dll does get some positive results on fixes, but please remember that these were specific to those people and may not apply to you.

Cheers for the reply Kaed. I've never used HiJackThis so I followed the advice on their website to press the analyse button. If you only need the log file then here it is:

Code:

The best Adware / Spyware remover I have used recently on several computers is:

Superantispyware: http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html

It has cleaned up some very infected computers where all other programs have failed, you only need the free version.

-------------------------------------------

Agreed, SuperAntispyware and Malewarebytes are far more effective than the old Spybot Ad-aware combo, use these two along with a good AV Kaspersky or Avira and you should be fine.
