Do you thnk African's can ever be self-sufficient/developed/civilised?

I know some countries, such as S.A. are partially developed, but probably because of White government.

I've just seen an advert where people talked about donating money to help African's be self suffiecient. They've had just as much time as the rest of the world to do it, though.

Why do they live in such awful conditions? Mud huts, famine, child mortality, lawlessness,...

Plus North Africans (e.g. Egypt, Morrocco) live in similar geographical area, and they are much more developed. Why?

The countdown to this become a Muslim  thread has started :p

My layman's guess as to the affluence of northern and southern africa is due to their distance from the equator - the hotter bits in the middle will most likely suffer from famine, disease, drought and dictatorship brought by all these.

Underdevelopment is by no means a phenomenon confined to Africa, it goes all the way around from America to (new)Zealand

I don't think that Africa can ever have an industrial revolution.

I would buy fresh produce from there. I know we buy S.A. apples, etc.

Plus they have a lot of natural resources, e.g. oil and gold. That won't last for long though.

My opinion is that, the way Africa is now, is the way its always going to be.

The African people are not capable of being as self-sufficient/developed/civilised as the west. Even when debt is written off it is replaced by yet more debt. Rhodesia was destroyed by the blacks and now so is South Africa. I think Africa will always be the same.

So is it the people or the environment?

How comes a massive amount of African Ameicans live poverty striken lives?

A friend of mine went to Washington DC. Apparently you cant go out after dark without a gun. It is completely crime riden.

African countries are in the difficulties they are now for many different reasons. Corruption is a massive problem which results in poverty which in turn promotes more corruption. Climate is another problem, it's rather hard to grow food in a country that doesn't have rain for several years. Then theirs the exploitation of African countries by the west...

Getting communities to the point where they are self sufficient is the aim of many charity organizations like Tearfund, who I've been on a couple of overseas trips with, but getting an entire country to the point of self sufficiency is a completely different task. I think it's entirely possible, but not in the near future and not without a massive paradime shift from us in the west.

they dont have as much rain which brings less wealth, they have corruption from fools.. slavery bugered them up along time ago aswell.. and theres no resources there.. also, they have weird customs and are more tribal and that

What? Africa will one day rule - Mark my words and tell it to your grand children.

Greed, corruption, bribes and illteracy are the order of the day but you guys are forgetting that this generation is fast fading and the ones replacing them like me and those upcoming will make it different.

Let's not forget africans in diaspora...again millions of me who might one day go home and make change. Let's not forget that technology and advances that exist in todays world will allow africa and most third world counteries to jump the ladder of development very fast. I.e By pass things like industrial revolution that most 1st world went through.....In other words, the development of african counteries will be very fast when compared to developed counteries.

It has already started - Mobile phone, agriculture, light and heavy industeries. Education is already spreading fast and people of africa are entering a generation of enlightenment - greed, coruption , mismanagement etc are now seen in full HD - i.e the full consequences.

I just got back from library. Im a bit tired, will add more if the thread comes alive. :)

You mean Zimbabwe was destroyed by Africans not blacks.

It already is fast, but oen thing you're clearly ignoring is the wealth gap between the 'developed' areas/people, and the under-developed areas/people. Using South Africa as a prime example (both because it's the most advanced Southern African country, and because I've lived there), there's a lot of development in business, technology etc, but only for those who can afford it. Nothing is really being done to make these benefits available to the people living in metal makeshift shacks along the sides of the motorways. Crime in SA is also rife, and nothing's being done about that. You can't develop your economy or society with a crimerate like that.

If SA is anything to go by, Africa has a long, long way to go before it can even hope to aspire to what you reckon it will be.

You basically mean do what S.Korea/Vietnam/China have done. Well I wish this was the case but I am unsure if it will happen and its ALL down to one problem. Corruption. This has destroyed Africa and is the cause of wars and a lot of Famine. If they wipe out corrupt governments that only think of lining their own pockets and actually think about the economy, think about stability then Africa can and would do rather well. Just think about the vast cheap labour market (even cheaper than China..). And indeed with amazing resources too. I just cant see it happening unless people wake up.

Actually, Zimbabwe imo is destroyed by Mugabe.

Same thing. I was countering Spie reference to 'blacks' and suggesting that 'africans' is a better word to use.

If there is catastrophic global warming, could Africa become uninhabitable?

No....I think Uk and the likes will be under water and more flooding might result in a better trade-off for africa.

Corruption.stability

Corruption has eaten deep i must admit but like i explained before it wont be for long. Nigeria for example has the equivalent of a Serious Fraud panel. With the power to arrest and interoggate almost anyone within nigeria. Ex-state governors and current governors have all been held to account for some of their embezzlement. Things are however at a grass root level but eventually it will send mesage right around a nation of about 22-25 million people (with over 500 different languages) that time is up for such things.

Speaking of stability - Most african counteries adopts a democracy system...Again things are at the rudimentary level but it is a step further and away from Military dictatorship that dont account to know one and rules with fear etc.

I dont expect most people in here to understand or see what im trying to say due to what i belive that 1st world people look at third world problems with a 1st world perspective....in other words, offering the logic of 1st world to sort out 3rd world issues.
