After 5 Years - it's Upgrade time!

So I've just posted in the GPU thread but thought it best I split this up. I am looking at doing an overhaul of my PC. My budget is about £1700 but I planned on spending £750 on a GPU and the rest (£950) on a PC upgrade.

I currently have this -
- 16gb (4x4) Corsair Vengeance (https://www.corsair.com/uk/en/Categ...l-Channel-DDR3-Memory-Kit/p/CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9R)
- i7 2600k
- Gigabye GA-Z68XP-UD3
- MSI GTX 970

I mainly do Sim Racing such as rFactor2, I also use Photoshop a lot as well as 3DS Max Rendering. My main requirement is that it's future proof, I won't be able to upgrade again for about 6 years so I need to get this right. I felt splitting the budget in this way made sense, I didn't really want to blow £1300 of budget on a 2080ti even though I'd love that card.

In my basket so far I have -

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £938.05 (includes shipping: £11.10)

What are your thoughts? I already have the case, PSU and a few extra hard drives. Do I have too much RAM? Is my Mobo Ok? Etc!

Any help is always greatly appreciated!

Nick.

Or an i7 9700k, same price but unsure of the differences.

As far as I know a gentleman showed me a benchmark and the i7 9700k scores the same as a 2700x at stock clocks but overclocking changes that.

I know that it does not sound like much but where the two processor's are used to their fullest.

Dan.

Forgot to say that through my stubbornness I’d prefer Intel chips sorry!

And Dan, you think I may as well stick with an i7 8700k? I’ll never overclock to be honest.

It depends what you can afford.

Ok so Intel processors well I recommend you look at the 9700k and non k if there is one since I am rusty.

Just reread your post I fully recommend the 9700k to you.

Much faster then the 8700k where all the cores are being used.

Do you want to upgrade in the future or you will settle with what you've got now and then rebuild the entire system later when upgrading?

Ahh thank you. So the i7 9700k then. I added these parts on Pc Parts picker where it checks compatibility and with the 9700k and the mobo it says this -

“Some Intel Z370 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Coffee Lake Refresh CPUs. Upgrading the BIOS may require a different CPU that is supported by older BIOS revisions.”

Should I be concerned? And why are they the same price, that confuses me!

My plan is to buy some rough variations of what I posted above and hope they last about 6 years. They’ll be no more buying after this :(

Well if it needs a bios update it won't prevent you from booting into windows the operating system.

You can update the bios when you are in windows so you well update the bios using a motherboard utility program and also downloading the bios file from the motherboard manufacturer website.

i7-8700k is 12 logical processors, i7-9700 is 8 logical processors. Hence, the same price and virtually equal performance.

He may as well get the 9700k in cinebench the 8700 scores 1300 points where the 2700x scores 1700.

I read the 9700 is like the same as the 2700x in some benchmark that is not cinebench.

Either way he would be better off with a 8700k from what you say as the two processor's score the same.

Dan

I’m so sorry but I have no idea what that means haha. Which would you go for?

i7-8700K if you want to last 6 years but that is too much time in today's CPUs competitive environment. I would rather wait and see Ryzen 3000 series. Might push your intel's prices down and you will get something decent at value.

Cheaper Aorus /good gabyye boards starting to become like gold dust !!!

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,652.64 (includes shipping: £11.70)

Worth waiting for CES anniucannoun for ryzen 3000 though still think launch is Q2 Computex

Afternoon all. I've decided to go with the i7 8700k, I have no intention on Overclocking and I feel this processor has popped up many times. Based on that, what Mobo and Ram do you suggest? Or can I not really go wrong? Would I be better with a Z370 board or a Z390? Again I hope to have this i7 8700k processor for about 5+ years.
