After a sporty a car around £2k... what not to get? What to get :D

I saw an mr2 roadster at a garage over weekend when I was searching in vein for a Cupra. The roadster looked nice but it's a bit slow like the mx5, but that's not the appeal I suppose. I was worried about the oil burning issues with the engine on a mr2 roadster.

Yeah if I buy something that ends up burning a litre of oil every week then could get rid if bought outright. That sounds good but makes it harder find something half descent with my funds.

Stupid Google Nexus phone keeps messing up on forums. Please delete if posted twice. Ta

Fiat hmm no, well actually my current Ford has never had to be Fixed Or Repaired Daily :p
In fact, I hate the old Mondeo so much ive not spent a penny on it in 5years & the darn thing wont break down, it just keeps going with no oil change/service, just 2 tyres in 5 years. My previous Saxo VTS however got washed & repaired daily grr.

Okay the TT at smelly end of the market has encouraged a torrent of despair from people questioning my sanity.

How about the E46 ?
325ti compact (or does ti mean compact?), oh no the Insurance is £8 more than a Cupra. D'oh!
They seam disturbingly cheap around an 03 plate, whats wrong with them?
Mpg is similar to my dog slow Mondeo too.

This particular example is only 12 miles away (there is a god), although no mention of service history.
BMW 3 SERIES 325ti SE 3dr Compact 2.5 2001 £2295

This one has service history but is 37 miles away.
BMW 3 SERIES 325TI SE 3DR BLACK LEATHER 2.5 2002 £2490

Do these things have to be serviced to get rid of the warning lights?
I could afford to just replace all the tyres one month, but am I mad as a hatter to go for an old fast beamer?

Naa not a ctr. At least I've doubled my search now to make things easier.
The mx5 is like a z3 or something, I'd have to get an old one for my budget & such a nice sports car does seem out of my league.

All the advice has been great, thanks. Certainly saved me from an old dodgy TT.
Its looking like a 325ti or Cupra now. The mx5 does not float my boat styling wise, I prefer something more aggressive looking.
I think maybe the BMW compact are cheap for what they are because they don't even qualify as a Marmite car, ie. everyone hates them & no one loves them... ha ha. Well I like them & think they look modern enough.
Maybe i'll get one & hate it then get a mx5. See how it goes.
The hunt is on now anyway :)
If I dont see anything worthwhile getting I've booked a another week off next month where i'll have another £800 perhaps.

Thoughts on these one anyone?
Please, no ropey or shed comments, obviously its not a £5k car. Genuine comments much appreciated. I'm learning though, these have a service history.

£2,490BMW 3 SERIES 325TI SE 3DR BLACK LEATHER 2.5 2002

Or world it be worthwhile & getting something like this in a month?

£3,495BMW 3 SERIES 325TI SPORT 3DR 2.5 2002

Need to Google the trim levels now, what the heck is SE lol.
Do they all have a CD changer cus most look like they have a tape player & that dash looks tricky to install a regular stereo, plus do the steering wheel buttons only work with the stock stereo?

£3.5k is a silly sum to spend on an eleven year old 325ti - £2.5k is plenty, nobody likes them. Don't know why you're insisting on cars from dealers though, it's near impossible to tell anything about the last person that owned the car (unless it's full of dents)

Yes I agree, 3.5k seems a lot for a 2002 car, maybe its the colour lol.

There just are not really any private sellers, except 1 which is only 12miles away but theres no mention of FSH, I'll call them tomorrow & ask.

Oh, is the cambelt a big issue on the BMW?

Looked at 4x Clio Sport 182 today.

One had a cracked steering wheel & snails living in the engine bay for £2k.

One in blue looked great on pics but engine had a loud rattle, very loud exhaust & all bits of Renault logo were painted over blue including the engine cover & it had been ruined, for £2.5k.

One looked like it had a bump on passenger door with no service history inc belts for £2.2k.

The last one for 2.3k I was tempted had the same loud rattle as another one but the pickup in 2nd felt slow (only 1 driven) & the power steering made a loud clicking noise (its just passed its MOT). A shame as that had a fsh & belts done last yr. This was the only car not to have illegal tyres up front!

Whats this loud rattle all about that 2 cars had when at idle that goes when revved?

Thinking need spend at lest 3k for one half descent like an 05 plate for 50k miles.

Might just get a Ford Focus 1.8 cus I think ya need at least 3k get something quick that's not a shed.
Time is up end Sep but have a week off then but no pressure in finding a sensible car then. At least I tried.

Noticed the v6 Mondeo as I was looking through them. Although its 60 time is similar to the 1.8 but it does 19mpg instead of 25mpg. Plus they're much rarer.
Looks like 2.5k gets an 05 facelift Mondeo. I'd even go diesel now as driving that 04 Clio Sport the other night really put me off a fast car: it was a 2.3k shed!

worth a look?

170brake, 32MPG, cheap as chips, reliable as, er, chips? :D

Naa, I could get something better, though perhaps not quicker. Plus that looks like a 1 MOT car, as in next MOT in May its bye, bye.

I've had my thirst for speed quenched by sheds, bald tyres & faded paint.
I'm going to be realistic & get something reliable & sensible, something like this but a few less miles & maybe a diesel 130 as I have more money too..

£2,195 Ford Mondeo 1.8 LX 5DR 2006

Ok, got a week off with £3k & the Mondeo will RIP on 29th so its show time!
The moment you've all been waiting for, another change of car? :p
For 2 weeks ive been looking at a Vectra. Now the awful Vectra has stayed in my thoughts longer than any other decision of car so far, so a Vectra it is.
I know people will say they're terrible cars & an 07 plate Vectra will be worse than a 02 plate MX5 or 15yr old GTI6, but ive seen every car to the grave with car cancer & a 5yr old car seems way more appealing. Plus I like their styling.

There are plenty to choose from & most have a full service history :)
I was going go for the post 2005 facelift with sat-nav, which narrows the search to SRI or Elite models I think.
Engine wise I thought the 2.2petrol @ 27mpg urban rather than the 1.8vvt 28mpg urban, although I think the 2.2 is more unreliable & more expensive to maintain because of the direct injection setup. Plus the 2.2 is chain driven which sounds great, but pre 2007 chains had lubrication issues & were prone to snapping. I need research this more.
Regards to diesel, which is way more popular & probably have lots of nice motorway miles sounds better, although the 120bhp I think is too slow, but the 150bhp would be ok. Although I only do 4000 miles/year so I dont know if the better economy would off-set the running of the diesel. Also I'm unsure yet as to the reliability/running costs of the diesel. A nice sight however is Ive noticed a lot of local taxis switching from Toyota to Vectra diesel and I thuoght the Asians were just racist in only driving Jap cars.

Any tips on what to look for with a post 2005 Vectra C would be nice. I'm sure a lot of folk hate the Vectra so no hate campaigns please.

I JUST BOUGHT A CELICA 190

Now shut up :D
Just kidding, even though some replies have been insulting at times, its the thought that counts. Thanks everyone :)

Its a Toyota Celica 1.8 VVTLI T SPORT on an 02 plate (registered Nov11) with a full service history & 99k miles. I pick it up on Mon/Tue after its had 12months MOT & it may get 2 tyres on the front. Its taxed until end Oct.
It was for sale at £2500 & I'm paying £2200 after getting £300 pt-ex on the Mondeo which they'll just weigh-in anyway (a local scrap yard offered me £150 if I drove it in).
I'm thinking of taking their 3 month warranty for £150 while I get to know the car (local garages supported).

In time honoured tradition with this thread I changed my mind again, partly due to all the flak about the Vectra & speaking to a taxi driver who has a Vectra diesel who said it was just a cheap in-between car & it was terrible.
It was a spontaneous decision last night, I just looked at the few 190 models on-line & went look at one today. JOB DONE!

The funny thing is I don't know much about them, except for the oil burning issues with the early 140bhp engines & that they're chain driven. Even so, I only do 4k miles/yr & could sell it on if need be considering the ultra high cost of s/h cars in scabby Stoke on Trent.
How does it get 190bhp from a 1.8L engine WTF! Does it have a turbo or is it the vvt thing? A daft question after just buying one lol. I test drove it & it didn't feel mega quick, but I didn't really push it over 6000rpm, which I believe is when the cams do something called vvt.

It has a few minor scratches down to the primer which they said they'd buff out or whatever? About what you'd expect for a 10yr old car. The wheels look stock so I presume they've been refurbished at some point as they're in good condition.
I HPI checked it before going & they even did a check on their PC while I was there & the VIN matches the reg-doc/car & its all ok. The only thing that bugged me was the HPI report said it had a colour change in 2009 from grey to blue, but its blue everywhere, in the engine bay etc. The service history called it an import at times, but the reg-doc says first registered in the UK. Anyway, import or not I think I paid a good price for it, especially dumping the Mondeo in the process, which would have impacted me more if buying private. I could not see any rust, being as it may be an import. Do I need be sure about that with the Insurers or will they know by the registration?
I think with what I've saved on spending £2200 rather than £2800 will negate the initial running costs, especially if it needs the odd job doing.

Certainly in better condition that a shed of a ClioSport 182 at £2400 I looked at with bubbling rust on the bonnet & a chipped steering wheel.
Cant wait for Monday. I think I earned the right to post some big images so here it is...

From what ive learned so far I dont think the 190 has the oil starvation issue.
My engine number 2ZZ-GE is not on the Toyota data sheet regarding the issue & if regularly serviced they may have sorted it anyway?
I read where one Celica owner went through 2x 140 engines then popped a 2ZZ-GE in to solve the problem, but is now complaining about the gear ratios not being suited to the vvtli.
