after best bang for my buck

this what iv pretty much decided on

AMD Opteron 64 UP 146 (2.0Ghz) S939 1Mb OEM

Asrock 939DUAL-SATA2 S939 PCI-E/AGP USB2 Lan 7.1Ch Audio

Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro - S754/939/940

all for the princly sum of £195.44 inc P&P

does that sound like a fair deal. and will I get a decent boost over my xp2500 @ 3200 speeds

hopefully offloading my xp2500, abit NF7-S 2.0 and Thermalright SP97 HSF should offset some of the cost.

someone tell me its worthwhile upgrade upgrade before I bottle out

It is at present. it used to run fine at ultra speeds, then the odd game used to get corruption on so i back it off back to GT speeds. its fitted with a zalman VGA copper cooler so heat isnt an issue.

guess I better order then bits then eh :D

Go for it ! its the best thing i have done, i went from an xp 2400 @ 2250, games run much much better for me now.
i run my Gt @ 380x1050 cause i think its still new even though its over a year old. sad aint it can't afford it to blow it up

oh well iv taken the plunge and bought it all.

heres hoping I have no trouble getting the most out of the chip, the black art of overclocking is a mystery to me at the best of times

On the 939 dual sata my opty 146 will go to 2.7 but then the HTT lock kicks in. Still havent tried the beta bios'. The opty will go to 2.88 in my other board so there is still life left in it.
Went from xp2500 @3200 speeds and its like night and day.

Sounds like an awsome set up. Even if the 146 is a bottom of the barrel CABGE you'll still get 2.5 without a doubt. What is the max stable HTT on the asrock? I guess that will be the limiting factor.

EDIT: From what William says about the HTT of that board you should get to 2.6-2.7 no problem. Even terrible 146s can do 2.6ghz.

williamw11 just out of interest mate do you mind telling me what bios setting you used.

seems the only thing I will have trouble with it getting the memory timings to run correctly. I have 2 gig of Corsair 2GB DDR XMS3200C2PT TwinX (2x1GB) CAS2 (MY-079-CS) so what settings would i need to hit 2.6

well I ordered the opteron 146 and the asrock mobo. oh and the freezer pro HSF, should be with me in a day or too. heres hoping I get a good chip.

If you ordered it from the same place I did, which I think you did, then you should get a CACJE 0604CPAW. Its OK, I got mine up to 2.52ghz on stock volts with a g cooler pro, on the asrock dual sata. I was hoping for a bit better, so I'm selling the board and have ordered and DFI infinity to push it further. :D

Whack the memory on a 166MHz (DDR333) divider, you'll have no problems.

With the CPU overclocked to say 2.5GHz (250 x 10) this will give you a RAM speed of 207MHz, only fractionally above spec. My Corsair 2GB set runs fine at 218MHz @ 2.5-3-3-6 1T, so I foresee no problems for you.

That's similar to what I'm using. My ram's stable at 3-3-3-7 1T@210mhz with the asrock. And it only crucial's budget brand. :D
