I have disabled Superfetch as I am using an SSD, and now task manager is reporting memory usage differently. Could you let me know if it looks normal? I'm slightly confused by the 0 mb of free memory!

Thanks in advance.

file cache? what files is it caching? sorry, I don't know much about memory usage. thanks

Ok thanks, so my image posted in the OP is normal even though I have no applications running (pure idle state)? I can appreciate how the cache works but how is memory freed up for applications when I run them? is some of the cache then written to disk to make way?

sorry for my masterclass in noobmanship!

The memory usage in your screenshot is fine, it looks like perhaps you've ran a virus scan or been copying a lot of files or large files around on your system, the available memory number is what's important which is showing you that you have most of your memory available for use. If another program needs the memory from the file cache then Windows will give it to the program.
