Age of Conan Open BETA starts today

Game keeps crashing for me :(

Kicking me back to desktop as well.

The graphics are pretty good, but even with 2 x 3870x2's i canna have the detail up too high but im running at 2560x1200 :D

What's the rest of your specs? The cards you have ought to be able to get reasonable results on high settings so long as the other specs of the machine are top notch - which I'm assuming is likely.

Something I had seen touted around was that even top end machines still dont get great FPS on the high settings and that FC were claiming that these machines need to take advantage of DX10 to be able to get the results users are expecting. I just don't see why the DX10 hasn't been tested at least in closed beta. Maybe they are just confident how good it is, or that it's such a load of crap that they want people to buy the game blindly on the back of the promise of the performance boost - which would be pretty dodgy ground to be walking on legally Id've thought :S

Im also willing to bet that WAR will have a much smoother release than AOC. You can spot the polish a mile off just from the ingame vids.

Good God!??!?! You serious? I am assuming you are commenting on the visuals in regard to the polish as you can't really assume much else from the vids gameplay wise. Therefore I just don't see what you are seeing there. I think that the WAR graphics look like an RTS zoomed in. they are low res, if not on the chars then definately on the environments and the animations are stilted.

Not that this is going to stop me being very interested in this title once it is out however, graphics will not be it's strong point in the aesthetic sense. In fact I would go so far as to state that it looks, well, a bit bland at the moment. It will play better that AOC on more machines, but imo the WAR graphics look worse than WoW's.

Looking forward to it still though and will be interested to see if it can deliver on it's promises esp the dynamic quests. Also it has huge orcs in it as well, which pretty nuch has me at the til with cash in hand.

well i hope they fix few major problems and maybe when it releases we see constant updates. hope there promises for dx10 is trough to would like to play the game on high @ 1680x1050 on dx10 with 40~50 fps

Slighty OT, but devs have said many times the WARs current graphics *are* low settings only with no lighting etc in the beta client right now. There are some videos floating about showing medium graphics with some lighting on youtube, they're from various shows so don't break NDA. ag:

I'm not sure if it's true, but the above is said to be medium-ish settings without full lighting etc. Also, lots of placeholder graphics too.
While they won't match AoC, I think most people will be pleasently supprised when it goes live.

To me WAR's interface looks a lot cleaner than Conan's. Also those videos are very nice (seen them before).

Well comments like yours are hardly those of a mature adult.

I'm guessing the vast majority of WAR's players will be adults. Add to that that you haven't substantiated your claims, apart from "it's over 18".

WAR to me is far more in depth, it also looks damn nice. The graphics aren't particularly cartoony - they're just about right imo.

looks like another typical mmo release, buggy and lacking content.

Compared to the likes of Vanguard and Hellgate: London which i was in beta for as well as now AoC (closed beta) i can safely say AoC is not going down the same path as those 2. I would compare it more to EQ2 beta/release.

The thing that stands out about WAR compared to say AoC is the lore/story/history, much like WoW, WAR has a great history/story to tell. The story of Conan imo is poor in comparison.

WRT graphics. WOW has proved that you dont need realism to pull off a good game. they do what they say on the tin and as a result most computers could actually run it at release. now what % of people can run AoC, not many that is for sure.

WAR is going to be of the same theme. It makes sense, you dont need all bells and whistles to make an mmo, you just need the graphics to do their job and that is all. then you can have all the time in the world developing content rather than trying to get performance out of the visuals. AoC visuals are overkill and the majority of gamers will not have the tech to run them. So why invest so much R&D in developing visuals (and then forever enhancing performance) when only a minority will see it all, it doesnt makes sense!

I used WAR as a comparison of how an MMO should be developed(not to start a flame war..). AoC has tryed to do WAY too much, for a very small minority. WAR on the other hand (along with EVE/WOW) will do what it says on the tin and Id bet my current machine will run it just fine come the end of the year (or whenver it is released :))!
kids playing WAR vs. AoC... You'll be in for a big surprise if you play AoC!

Oh and there are MANY gameplay vids out tehre, just have a google...

Oh come on...seriously...give me a break. You surely cannot be so naive as to think that because its got an 18 rating there wont be kids running around in it. What 18 rated game in history has ever done that? I bet most of the people playing GTA IV are probably under 18.

As for graphics, really, anyone who puts graphics above gameplay is astonishingly shallow. I dread to think how many now legendary games they have turned their noses up at just because its graphics were its weak point.

Mind you, I grew out of judging things by its looks about 20 years ago when I realised that a pimped car didnt make it the best car and a stunning body didnt make her the best woman. These days I find that system still often applies, as I still find today that Crysis and Oblivion may look stunning, but played like crap. Down to personal tastes though I guess, and what the hell is tarted? I am not sure what fruit filled pastries have to do with anything

finally downloaded the client and had a play around. Can play with everything maxed out, it stutters occasionally, but seems to run ok. Looks nice on full (does selecting the dx10 client option make any difference?), although the 2d pixel foliage looks a bit iffy (it moves to always point at the camera) Loading times are a bit on the long side. Some of the animations were a bit weird too (jumping mainly).
Is the open beta made easier? I ask as I was running around in the beach bit as a naked assassin. Using basic skills I could run into a group of 4-5 mobs and take them down without a worry. I dinged level 8 in around 15 minutes and didn't die once. Slightly worrying if the released game plays the same. Once I got that +13 poison skill, i was near one shotting things. This is made increasingly worse when you hit what ever is in front of you, so one move can kill 3+ mobs.
