Age of Empires Online Released! Free to play

Anybody bought the special bundle yet? If so, how much did it cost? Enjoying dipping into this game but picked up a lot of schematics which require premium content :(
I don't want to splash a little cash if this game will die like Company of Heroes Online.

Ah, I was looking for this thread.

I just had a craving to play some AoE2, and thought I would try this out again ... After giving it some time I'm now hopelessly addicted.

I ended up buying the £9.99 DLC bundle which included the persians, egyptians and defense of crete, plus the skirmish booster pack is currently available for free, so for just a tenner you can get fully unlocked gameplay on two civs, horde defense maps, and skirmish mode which is really good.

Im not buying the Greeks yet though, I'm hoping that after the Celts are released they will release another bundle pack with both the celts and greeks like they have with the persians + egyptians.

Theres currently a 10 hour server maintenance downtime though, right when I want to play some more :(

The graphics look all cartoony and silly? I loved AOE2 and the original though.

The trailers make it look like that and the marketing behind the game is pure rubbish, but when you play the game it looks and feels like a massively improved and better looking AoE2.

The graphics work perfectly for the game, the trailers make it look 1000x worse than it really is.

I got the impression that they took AoE2, improved it in every way possible, and then tried to market it to the farmville audience and failed by doing that.

Yep, my feelings too. I enjoy the varied missions, but the market system and compulsory co-op quests spoil the game. Also limiting the number of crafting schools is silly if you play the game as a single-player like myself.
Aside from that, I am enjoying the game.

I dont mind the limited crafting schools as you have 7 schools and soon 4 civs, so you can have 2 schools on each one. I picked engineering and construction first purely based on the sound of the schools, but then after reading into each one I changed to religion and cavalry as I only ever priest + elephant zerg with the egyptians, with slingers for defense until I get to age 3. Religion also gets you access to crafting light armor which also goes on slingers and villagers, so that seemed like an ideal combination with cavalry for elephant and chariot gear.

Im not aware of any compulsory co op quests yet, but I'm only level 20. Everything is pish easy with war elephant spammage though, the only tricky part is getting up to war elephants asap and building a strong enough economy to spam them.

The rarity of Priestess of Ra sceptres is annoying me. I had a level 8 blue sceptre with +22% empower dropoff, and +20% healing, then got a level 10 blue one with +25% dropoff, but only +10% healing.

I took a while pondering between the two, but then decided that the higher empower dropoff was better along with wheelbarrow and storehouse techs, but the healing was noticably slower.

I've been looking for a level 15-20 blue sceptre with both healing and dropoff bonuses of at least 25%, but cant find anything like that. Theres a green level 36 sceptre available at an NPC somewhere with 26% dropoff and 15% healing, but thats sucky and barely any better than the level 10 blue one!

Or forgetting about the healing, this thing really is epic:

But I doubt I'll ever find one.

Im glad that there was a persia and egypt bundle pack for a tenner, otherwise I'd be limited to rubbish gear.

Age of Empires Online...

Hi there! Very recently i d/loaded the free version of AOEO, which i am enjoying extremelly! I am considering spending some money on it and would like to ask:

  • What is the next thing to buy after the free version? I'm a bit confused with all those "Steam starter packs", "Expansions", "Pro civs", Empire points etc....

  • Is there a community alive with this game? Are there multiplayer games, etc?

    Many thanks!

Every now and then on Twitch TV I see a lot of competitive games going on with AoEO so there still is a community but its not massive.

I personally would play the free version a little longer, explore the community and see what you think. If your not happy, maybe by AoE2HD from Steam and play instead?

You only need to buy the 4 main civ packs which might be on sale on Steam for £9.99 sooner or later for all 4 (thats the usual price in the Steam winter sale so should be the same in the summer sale. The rest of the content you can earn the ingame currency (Empire Points) to buy them with just by playing the game but you need to get all 4 main civs up to lvl40 first this then allows you to earn the Empire Points to buy the content very quickly if you play solid for a month when you have reached lvl40 you can buy all other ingame content for nothing (crazy economics from MS but there you go they are giving away their own premium content for free ).

Most of the game can be played Solo anyway you can grind out all the missions & content that way will take around 200-300 hours minimum but personally I had a great time on this game over 2 years spent around 500 hours on it overall  I have some friends who spent over 800 hours on it

Co-Op is not really required at all although you earn more XP that way but you really need another newbie player & beware the gold traders as they all charge rip-off prices for impatient players just buy some Premium Civs then earn the XP to lvl to 40 & start earning the Empire Points to buy it all for free.

If however you do not want to wait for a Steam sale to buy the 4 main civs for £9.99 then its going to cost you around £60-80 to buy them & the Booster packs your best bet is probably this pack:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/201969/

Its only £22.99 & you only get 3 civs not 4 but there is enough content here to let you earn the XP & Empire points slightly slower but otherwise you need to wait until/when/if MS have the 4 civs sale offer again where they give you 1 free Civ if you buy the other 3 together.

Avoid buying the Pro Persian & Babylonian Civs as their missions are crap & you get no LIVE achievements with them either so best to buy them when you earn the free Empire Points ingame after reaching lvl40. There are still a lot of players online but most of the game is Solo based anyway some of the harder missions require Co-Op but most of it is doable on Solo I do not think the servers will be going anywhere for a few years as so many still play daily so you should get plenty of time on this as MS made a huge mistake when they cancelled development in letting you quickly earn the Empire Points to buy all the Premium Content if you already owned at least 1 Premium Civ!!

Really helpfull! Thanks for taking the time to write this!:)

I bought the game with incremental civ packs via MS Marketplace over the past 2 years. I enjoy the game as a solo player, but worry that the servers will be switched off in the near future.
