5 year old can be sold a pack of paracetamol, but a 17 year old can't be sold a pack of plastic cutlery. What's up with that?

When I was in Morrisons buying plastic cutlery, the checkout did prompt for age verification, I wasn't asked but the checkout assistant did say they are told to check.

Christ, I could find environmental 'weapons' that would do more harm. Guess it's just the supermarkets covering their back though.

I'm pretty sure a 5 year old wouldn't be allowed to buy paracetamol, even if it was legal, morally you just wouldn't sell it to them would you?

I've worked in a few jobs that required me to ID people, Barman, HMW, Tesco

When I worked in HMW and we used to get kids trying to pay for their parents DVD's because the parents were too lazy to queue up, then they'd get annoyed when we said we couldn't legally sell it to them unless their parent was with them.

In Tesco we used to get 14-16 year olds crowding round the alcohol isle then the oldest looking used to try (and fail) to buy a massive bottle of Tesco Value Vodka

As a barman we used to get the 18+ people buying alcohol for the under 18's

I wouldn't put it past a 5 year old these days to stab another kid with plastic cutlery over stolen jelly tots. Just what your world is coming to! :P

Did you send in a 5 year old to buy your drugs? I bet he passed a note to the pharmacist. "My mum wants a packet of....".

Do you look under 25? Did you have ID? Then what is the problem.

It is not the shops fault or the member of staff fault. It is the law makers fault.

If someone sells you an age restricted product without asking for proof of age and it turns out you are under age, then they can ultimately end up with a criminal record for an offence with a minor.

5 year old + paracetamol? Must be a very crazy checkout person?!?!

What sort of person would ask a 5 y/o to buy the drugs in the first place?

I remember a while back an old gent being denied alcohol because he didn't have ID. The supermarket actually backed the checkout operator up, rather than seeing common sense. Madness.

a mate and his partner were at morrisons and buying wine with the rest of thair shopping. asked for id, his partner showed them her driving licence but still wanted to see my mates. he argued with them for ages eventualy he went home and got his id just to shove it in thair faces.

My fiancee got ID'd for buying Pritt Stick, which, to my knowledge, has never contained solvents in its history and was one of the points of it

/Edit

She's 28 btw :p

I've actually been ID'd for Jamaican ginger beer before. Lady at the checkout seemed a little clueless that it doesn't actually contain alcohol.

I'm afraid you really need to elucidate on your point as while age restrictions can sometimes seem daft the example you've given is missing too much information to be worthwhile. Over the counter medicines are sold at the discretion of the retailer so it may be that 5 year olds can buy it but in other stores it might be those who are 16+ or at any other arbitrary limit they choose to enforce. Who wasn't allowed to purchase plastic cutlery and what reason was given for the refusal?

I remember an Indian lady refused to serve my friend alcohol at Asda checkouts. Bear in mind he was 18 and she was insistent that he had to be 21 to purchase alcohol.

While I agree it's daft, I'm glad the supermarket backed the operator up as it's them who drum it into their staff that they must check ID.
