this is perfectly legal. its only illegal to sell alcohol to under 18s and for under 18s to drink it in the bar area. if an over 18 bought some alcohol and gave it to anyone over 5 outside the bar area (perhaps at the outside tables) then it would be legal for them to drink it.
this is coming from QI, and quite an old episode at that, so feel free to prove me wrong (preferably with that direct gov site thingy ive seen posted here a few times, rather than wikipedia)
(3)A person commits an offence if—
(a)he buys or attempts to buy alcohol on behalf of an individual aged under 18, or
(4)A person (“the relevant person”) commits an offence if—
(a)he buys or attempts to buy alcohol for consumption on relevant premises by an individual aged under 18, or
(5)But subsection (4) does not apply where—
(a)the relevant person is aged 18 or over,
(b)the individual is aged 16 or 17,
(c)the alcohol is beer, wine or cider,
(d)its purchase or supply is for consumption at a table meal on relevant premises, and
(e)the individual is accompanied at the meal by an individual aged 18 or over.
150Consumption of alcohol by children
(1)An individual aged under 18 commits an offence if he knowingly consumes alcohol on relevant premises.
It is against the law:
* to be drunk in charge of a child under seven in a public place or on licensed premises
* to sell alcohol to someone under 18, anywhere
* for an adult to buy or attempt to buy alcohol on behalf of someone under 18
* for someone under 18 to buy alcohol, attempt to buy alcohol or to be sold alcohol in any circumstances (unless acting at the request of the police or a weights and measures inspector)
* for someone under 18 to drink alcohol in licensed premises, with one exception - 16 and 17 year olds accompanied by an adult can drink but not buy beer, wine and cider with a table meal
* for an adult to buy alcohol for a person under 18 for consumption on licensed premises, except as above
Drinking at home
It is not illegal for a person under 18 to drink alcohol at home or at a friend’s house. Parents can choose to give young people some of their own alcohol when at home.

i always found it off that you cant buy a knife...
why do chavs use knives? why dont they sharpen a stick into a shank
1 its legal, 2 you can toss it and the cops cant find it easy...
I don't think Trading standards ever use fake ID for legal reasons.
Quite. A local Tesco to me lost it's license (albeit only on the self scan bit. Do you have different licenses for the manned checkouts and the selfscan Rroff?) due to Trading Standards sending in kids to try and buy booze.
Without alcohol sales, I'd imagine a Glaswegian Tesco to be pretty stuffed! Far better to err on the side of caution than take a risk.
This is incorrect. It's legal to provide someone over 5 alcohol at home, but it is illegal outside the home. The only time a minor (those under the age of 18) can drink in a bar is if it is with a meal, and the drink is wine, beer or cider.
No idea on the legal side of it but my boss always brings up stories of them testing using fake ID at the age restricted sales briefing.

I'm 23 and got id'd for fags, showed university id to him... "no driving license no fags"... But I'm at university... apparently not good enough...
People under 18 can't have alcohol in public, perhaps rather sadistically, I take great pleasure in disposing of said alcohol should I ever see it. Secondly you can't buy alcohol for anyone under 18 without breaking the law.
ok, so i was close, especially considering this appeared on an episode of QI that i watched once several years ago. i just forgot the meal part
Age restrictions are absolute tripe I agree.
Especially for films, I'm 21 in a month yet still asked for ID for some 16+ films.
Plastic cutlery? You couldnt cut mash potato with those things.
I went to a party at my pals house (who's a copper). He had a box in the corner of the room with a random assortment of alcohol in it. It had been that weeks takings from underagers. Usually they pour it away, but some officers put a few bottles in the boot for him as it was his birthday. I took great pleasure knowing that I was drinking some 15 year olds Lambrini.![]()
