AGEIA PhysX™ Physics Processing Unit

Don't bother - there are next to no games that will make use of one and the technology is still quite immature. It's a complete waste of time and money. There are those who would disagree with me though.

THere are only like 3 games that use it, one of them being GRAW i think. But its a waste of money completely, you would see basicly no difference in the games.

Complete waste of time, money and a valuable pci slot. There's only a couple of game that support it at the moment so you would be better off waiting to see if it ever catches on. Games have to be written to be able to support it and at the moment there are hardly any software developers jumping on it.

I'm going to be really controversial and say that we still don't know for sure if the death of Ageias PhysX (PPU) will be a reality or not until UT2007 is released, don't foget that the new Unreal Engine 3 supports the PPU natively and many many publishers have obtained a license to use the unreal engine 3 so there there will be a lot games coming out that does support the PPU but it just depends how well.

There are about 8 games and you see a difference with a good speed boost.

On top of the full games are a bunch of demos and some free games. Each new games seems to be making better use of the PPU but support is still small. The newer PPU games are about x10 better then GRAW but unless you have a bunch of PPU enable games its best to wait before buying one.

The few games it works with do look better and run faster but the problem is lack of game support. Some big names have signed up to use the PPU.

Does anyone have one of these does it help with gaming?. Let me know anything you know about it.

it has pretty much died a death......

Especially with dual core CPU & multi-GPU solutions.....there will be no need for a separate chip to handle physics....it can all be written into a separate thread...

People have been saying that for a while but the GPU solution Havok FX has been out over half a year and we have yet to not only see any games but none have been announced that I am aware of. Dual core cannot match a PPU like Ageia or even a GPU doing the job of a PPU. Dual core is not a good answer a GPU or PPU is much better.

More and more major develops are sighing up with Ageia. With the amount that have singed up and major ones at that. I don’t see how you can say it’s died a death. Ageia seem to have a lot more support that Havok FX.

With non dedicated units introduced into gpu's with dx10, gpu's are much more capable that physx cards, both nvidia and ati have put down plans for 3rd card physics but as we know it is visual physics. At the end of the day, multithreaded engines that integrate a physics aspect into it are the better choice, Alan Wake being one of the demo's to prove this.

Noticed that i used your style of quoting just to make you feel happy :D

Erm, GPU physics is not out yet. Nobody said it was.

ATI are planning to launch it with their RD600 chipset, Nvidia probably will follow suit.

"Dual core is not a good answer a GPU or PPU is much better."

Avoiding the issue of quad-core (and octo-core on the horizon), are we? As we saw with the Alan Wake demo, quad-core is so far the best solution to simultaneously handle physics and A.I. and will most definitely beat out PPU and GPU physics technologies for the gold medal.

I am currently playing with the tech demo now, its out. I don’t know about ATI but its on Nvidia cards.

The Havok website says it come out for use Q2 2006 and it’s in current GPU’s. Apart from the Nvidia tech demo there doesn’t appear to be any game support. Nvidia call it NVIDIA Quantum Effects™ Technology so any GPU with that has it. There tech specs say

• Advanced shader processors architected for physics computation
• Simulate and render physics effects on the graphics processor

EDIT: Link to tech demo http://www.nzone.com/object/nzone_boxofsmoke_home.html

The physics didn’t look any better then today’s games to me and no match for the next generation of PPU games. I even expect GPU physics to beat quad core. But time will tell whos right and wrong. No way to be sure yet. I also dont like to comment on a game thats not due out soon as it could improve a lot.

Can you name these 8 games ? lol :p

"Can you name these 8 games ? lol"
Auto Assault
Bet on Soldier: Blood Of Sahara
Bet on Soldier: Blood Sport
Bet On Soldier: Blackout Saigon
City of Villains
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter
Switchball
Stoked Rider: Alaska Alien

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas unsure not tested it yet
RoboBlitz unsure not tested it yet

The next generation of games look to be good some from Bioware and Infernal looks nice.
