Are Agencies really any good?

I use to be registered to quite a few and never heard back from them.

I've decided to apply to a few more just for the sake of finding a new job hopefully.

No. I applied to various agencys without either hearing back or if they did contact me after "reading" my CV, usually the position they had for me was not what I was looking for. Fortunatly I managed to get a two week job with an agency by chance, although now I left that job trying to get a p45 from them is proving difficult as there always "in a meeting" or "out the office" when I call them.

IMHO they muck you around to much, to suit there needs only. Try applying for other jobs before heading down an agency route.

This ofcourse is just my opinion.

I have been a freelancer for five years and due to having my CV plastered over various jobsites, I get agencies calling me up ALL the time, at least 5-6 calls a day from different agencies.
90% of the time the jobs they phone up about are either non-commutable or totally unsuitable for my skills (dont they bother to read a CV before making the call :s).

What i can say is, eventually an agency will find you a suitable post which can often lead to future work, callbacks etc. If you have enough experience and confidence you can usually haggle the daily rate with them as most of *** time they are desperate to get their commision :D

Agencies are a complete waste of time. Say I have 6 months experience in product A, so I put it on my CV. They get a job that's looking for a senior team lead with 5 years experience in product A, so ask if I want to go for the interview. ¬_¬

Bascially I think they get paid for applications/interviews sent to the companies so they just end up throwing junk at you.

I find it easier to surf recruiting websites and pick the jobs myself.

It depends. Right after uni, whilst applying to other things I popped to an agency and got given an okay paid job the next morning. I saw another agency later the same day and they kept offering me work. I guess it just depends where you are, what jobs are available and what skillset you have.

I signed up to a local agency and they managed to find me work fairly quickly paying 8.67 an hour, which is pretty good considering I'm was only a student looking for a few weeks work over the summer.

I didnt want to start a new thread so i thought i'd revive this one....

I have just had an email from an agency asking me to find someone to apply for a job that they have going, all for a £100 high street vouchers!

WTF! The cheek of some people!

Dear Leaskovski,

I have downloaded your CV today from either CV Library or Jobsite. I have a few roles and one in particular that I could really do with some help on... Hope your in a good mood!

I have a role for a .Net (ASP.Net / VB.Net) Developer / Programmer in Tunbridge, Kent - the role is for a large company which are and have grown dramatically over the last 18months. They are seeking a new .Net developer to join the existing team but the role does involve travel and sometimes.. For quiet sometime I.e. Dubai for 12months, Texas 6months..

I appreciate you may not be in the role but you may know someone! So if you do.. Forward my details and if I place anyone you recommend within 6months of registering I will give you a Golden Hand shake! that's £100 of high street vouchers - your choice of course!

I know this is really cheeky and understand if you ignore this email but feel free to log on and check our jobs or look and change the details that we currently hold on our database directly, change your address, upload a new CV or simply let us know that you are looking for work and detail exactly what you want in terms of salary / package expectations, location or job role etc.

Go to our jobs page and logon using the details below.

The only experiences I have of agencies are very good.

Brook Street got me a job within 2 weeks at a company called Lightmaker (look us up ;)) and now I have an awesome job with excellent career prospects.

Had it not been for the agency I wouldn't have found the job.

EDIT: About that ladies email to you, she even got the town wrong. There is no TUNBRIDGE in Kent. You have TONBRIDGE or TUNBRIDGE WELLS :) Silly bint.
