AGP GeForce Ti4200 64MB vs. AGP GeForce 6200 256MB

I have a Ti4200 which has died on me after trying to replace the noisy fan heatsink with a big shiney Zalman passive cooler. It still works (sort of), so long as no hardware acceleration is being used....odd I know but hey!

Anyhow, I don't really play that many games but those I do play are Warcraft III, HL2, C&C Generals, CoD and MoH.

Would a GeForce 6200 be faster than my Ti4200 and run these games reasonably? I'm not looking for light-speed performance but I like the fact that most of these GPU's are passively cooled and they both DVI and S-video outputs.

If the card isn't that great, what about a 6600 or 6800 (I know these are faster but how do they compare to my old Ti4200)? Keep in mind that I really don't want to spend a lot of money as I use my PC mainly for photo and video editing and for the occaisional game.

Cheers all in advance!!!

Nick

Personally I would consider a 6600GT. It is a good all round card for less than £100. It will see you through another few years as did the Ti4200.

Ps: Welcome to the forums.

Yeh i will 2nd the 6600GT option.Ran 1 for ages and it managed CSS just fine.Fair enough i couldnt have all the AA/AF etc on but it was a trouble free card.

Hi King_Boru! Cheers for the welcome and thanks for the info.

Just wondering, is the 6200 really that much slower? Any idea how it compares to the Ti4200?

Also, just spoke to a colleague of mine at work and he suggested an ATI card. What's your opinion on these? I'm a bit reluctant since I have ForceWare drivers installed and I've heard that if I installed a Radeon, it's highly recommended to reinstall the OS and really can't deal with that since I just spent about 2 weeks reinstalling after installing another hard disk and moving it on there.....

Thanks again in advance for the help!

You dont need to re-install windows. Just remove the NV driver in Safe Mode, run a registry cleaner (like pc tools Registry Mechanic) and then install the ATI drivers.

As for the 6200. I personally would steer clear of it. If you wanted an ATI card then chioce is somewaht limited as PCI-E is taking over. But you can pick up X800GTO's for a little over £100 new and they perform very much like a 6600GT but without SM3.0 support.

The whole ATI v Nvidia thing is irrelevent these days as they both offer excelent products. For price though a 6600GT is an excelent card. I would go for the Leadtek one as I have owned one and it never let me down.

OK, so i'll skip the 6200. Now my last question! Thanks for bearing with me and sorry for the stupidity!!!

There are two cards available....a 6600 and 6600GT. The price difference is €36...about 50% more....I live in Austria (UK expat).

What's the difference between the two and is it worth the extra?

Cheers!!!!! :D

i advise you to get a gainward 6600 GT PCI-E GLH. its an excellant clocker, i mean Excellant!. take a look here it shows you the overclocks achieved, and also how to volt mod it and vmem mod it. this looks like your best bet. you should be able to run those games on medium detail at a decent res now, without breaking the bank at all

TBH, i'm not really looking to overclock the card at all. I've never really been 100% comfortable with it plus I like my PC to run quiet (shhhhhhh).

I'm going to have a browse around Vienna but no leadteks around. Has anyone heard of Club 3D and if they are any good?

G-Force4 TI's (forget MX) only were DX8.1 cards the 6000 series of Nvidia regardless of speed are all DX9C / P.S 3.0 / S.M 3.0 / HDR ready and have purevideo onboard.

The 6600GT is quite a bit quicker than the 6600 but if you're not playing many games and if you're only moving from a GF4 Ti4200 the 6600 is still a good card

Make sure that you get an AGP card, not a PCI-E card. The one recommended earlier was PCI-E - this is the new format and they're not cross compatible

Club 3D are fine

The 6600 runs with standard DDR ram which is significantly slower than the GT's GDDR3. The core on the 6600 is also clocked 100Mhz~ slower.

Also, as mentioned above, make sure it is an AGP card. The AGP 6600GT AGP can be recognized by an HSI heatsink located just below the GPU cooler which is mounted diagonally over the card.

Good luck.

Need anything just ask.

King.

if the 6200 has a 128 bit memory bus then it is lots more powerful than the ti4200. also the 6200 if its agp can be unlocked to 8 pipes and then you will really be laughing. also the 6200 clocks real well, all manage over 400mhz core and lots manage 500mhz core.

start with your budget, how much do you want to spend, then think about how much you could spend!

If your looking at 6600GT, then 6800's are in the frame, there coming down in price and well worth the extra...

so how much will your squeeze let you spend?

i wouldnt be suprised if a 6200 128 was aroudn the same speed as a ti 4200

it wont unlock, they stopped that a while back, and inly the pci-e 1s unlocked anyway

if your looking for cheap a second hand 9800pro like me ;)

OK....it's been decided.....I'll go for a 6600GT. They're about €138 for a Gainward one too....but there are also others for the same price such as AOpen, Asus, PNY and Club 3D.

Which of these is the best / quietest...and finally memory sizes! Which should I get. 128 or 256? From what I've read, not much uses 256 yet but that is set to change. Does it really make that much of a difference and is 128 enough? There's quite a hefty price increase for the 256 so unless there is a massive performance increase with a 256 card, i'll just help myself to the 128.

Again, thanks for the help everyone!

feeling silly as i've been out of the trade so long.....

256MB does make a difference nowadays, and will matter more with forthcoming games. The 256MB 6600GT is overpriced tho, its a tough one... :( But i guess if you've been using a GF4 all this time, a 128MB 6600GT would be a nice boost.

To be fair, the Ti4200 is a great card. It ran CS:Source really quite well with an average of about 30fps and most other games would play quite well with it.

Still it was time for a change anyway, but I wasn't planning anything until May when I get my bonus :( Bugger!

I'd also go for the 128MB version

The GF4 Ti is a great card - I was using it up until a year ago and as you say it ran HL2 fine, even on a poor P4!

:) Try get a 256MB as 128MB has been around since I has my Ti4600, you will benifit more and fact is the 128 is only ddr, the 256 is ddr3 lot cooler and better overall esp more than cards with ddr2.

BEAN, give us a max price in £ please that you are willing to spend, then we can see if you get a 6600GT and what kinda ram.
