hey.. first post, so bare with me.

I got £170 to spend....

But i can spend it all on an AGP graphics card because i need a new power supply unit.

Im a bit out of touch with graphics card's and computer hardware in general, so what would be my best option for a new AGP graphics card?

My computer specs are:

AMD 2800+ Barton
1GB 3200 ram
120GB harddrive
3 80mm fans
dvd writer and cd writer

Sapphire X1600 Pro 512MB DDR2 AVIVO TV-Out/DVI (AGP) - Retail (GX-120-SP)

£93

XFX GeForce 6800 GS 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/DVI (AGP) - Retail (GX-060-XF)

£164

yea, i have a 9800Pro now, but the molex connector poll has melted..

so i assume i need to get a new graphics card... i dont neccesarily need it to b fast, my 9800Pro played all the games that i play fine. But at the mo, i cant play any because its naffed..

i was looking at this:

HIS Excalibur ATI Radeon X1600 Pro ICEQ 512MB DDR2 TV-Out/DVI - Price: £81.95 (£96.29 Including VAT at 17.5%)

or

Sapphire X1600 Pro 256MB DDR2 AVIVO TV-Out/DVI (AGP) - Retail (GX-116-SP) - Price: £74.95 (£88.07 Including VAT at 17.5%)

or

Sapphire ATI Radeon X800 GTO 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/DVI (AGP) - Retail (GX-122-SP) - Price: £109.95 (£129.19 Including VAT at 17.5%)

The X800GTO is the quickest card out of those, performing similar to an X800Pro so a fair bit quicker than the X1600Pro

The X1600Pro will be comparable in performance to your 9800Pro - get the 256MB version though as it's not quick enough to use the extra ram on the 512MB version. Then again, it's only £8 more for the 512MB with the fancy cooling

If your 9800Pro is fast enough for you then I'd save the £30 and get the X1600Pro. I'd still be tempted to spend the extra money and make it a decent upgrade, so I'd get the X800GTO

You should be able to get a 9800Pro for about £45 second hand - worth considering

Thank you very much, very helpful :)

I did some research and the only reason why i would pick that 512 x1600 was because of the cooling, as i read it doesnt improve things much.

Mayaswell try a new graphics card rather than just buying another 9800pro, although it served me well and second hand can sometimes be more problamatic.

Conclusion:

Taking your advice, im going to splash out on a X800GTO.

Now i need to decide on a power supply link to that thread - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17601537

Try and find a second hand 6800GT somewhere. Would be better than a X800GTO (simply because it is faster) whilst also offering the added benefits of Shader model 3 (Not that important but still beneficial).

If you're buying new I'd go with the 6800GS. Very similar performance to a 6800GT despite having fewer pipelines, and in any case the 6800GT is very hard to find these days.

If custom GPU coolers dont use the same connector as the stock, you could simply replace that couldnt you?.....

Or is the connector for more then powering the cooling?

How did you manage to melt it?

I have a Sapphire 9800 flashed to pro, how much would I have to spend to get a decent performance improvement, as well as some decent cooling, as my temps aren't that good at the moment.

I managed to get my hands on a second hand XFX GeForce 6800 GS 256MB for just over a ton, is this a good deal and will I now be able to have a decent go at COD2?

I'd say thats a good deal mate as they are currently going for £160 new.

So long as you have a reasonably fast CPU and at least 1GB memory I would think you should be able to run COD2 with most settings on medium-high.

personally i would save up more...

youve got £170 at the moment,

sell your current board, CPU, and cooler for £60/£70

buy asrock dual sata 939 mobo £39 inc vat
AMD 3700 san diego core (this week only, £64 inc vat)
Arcti cooler pro skt 939 (this week only, £12inc vat)
X1800XT (this week only £152 inc vat)

total = £267 - say £65 from sale of old bits = £202 which means give or take a tenner, you only need to find an extra £30 to add to your current ammount of £170 to get a rather kick arse rig.

its all sold here at OCUK, if you want to do this and need help then click on the trust button on my post and e-mail me :)
