Hello

I have a PC that's a couple of years old now that has an AGP XFX GeForce 6800GT 256MB DDR3 DUAL DVI and TV OUT graphics card.

Would I get any significant performance improvement by upgrading to the AGP EVGA GeForce 7800 GS OC 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/DVI (AGP) - Retail (256-A8-E506-AX)?

Thank you.

Ian.

The agp 7800's were a fair bit slower than the 7800's on pci-e - basically different cards. The only exception being the Gainward 7800 cards, which were pci-e chips with a bridge, there were 2, being based on a 7800 gt & 7900 gt respectively. They'll be very hard to find now. The radeon 1950pro agp is much more poweful than a standard 7800gs, so that's the one to go for if you can afford it.

I've looked around for a 1950Pro, and there's very little difference in cost between that and the GF 7800GS so I guess it's going to be the 1950Pro.

Thank you for the information.

Was it factory over-clocked ? Or perhaps the drivers improved performance over time ? I remember from reviews at the initial release that the 7800gs was reckoned to be little faster than the 6800gt.

both the 6800gt and the 7800gs are 16 pipeline cards. The 7800GT was 20 and the GTX 24.

7800gs performance is a little better than the 6800GT due to faster clocks but it's not ground breaking.

The Ati 1950 is hard to beat

Yeah it was factory overclocked version ran at 425/1250 i think,i`ve now got up to 449/1338,using the latest nvidia drivers.
Just out of interest, will a older driver be more suitable for higher clock speeds for overclocking.
Thanks
Steve
