Is it really true that the AGP format is obsolete already?
It is according to this thread!

I know that PC technology has to continue to evolve but if the article is true, I am amazed at how quickly AGPx8 has become obsolete when you consider how long PCI survived for sound cards and 56k modems for example!

It doesn't really bother me as I haven't upgraded my PC for over 3 years so I am overdue for an upgrade, but I feel a bit sorry for those people who have recently bought an AGP mobo and graphics card.

Is there any reason why the AGP format is obsolete so quickly?
I expect it is down to nVidia and ATI deciding this or is there another reason I wonder?

I'm curious!

"already" AGP has been going for a long time now, in computing terms anyway.
The main reason is Nvidia/ATi wanted to, think of all the new graphics cards and motherboard chipsets they could sell. And due to the increased bandwidth for SLi and Crossfire

It's the same as everything... I think you forget how long AGP has been going and how it's been nearly obsolete for a year and a half already. PCI-E provides faster maximum bandwidth, but more importantly more juice to the card. This means you don't have to fanny around with two molexes sticking out all over the place like the 6800-U. I myself am one of the "Bought an AGP mobo and 6800gt" crowd, but I don't care, as my rig is fine atm. TBH when it comes to upgrading time I wont care about going PCI-E as I'd need to get a new mobo/gfx card anyway to justify upgrading.

I'm the same as my PC is getting dated as a lot of technological advances can be made in only 3 years it seems!

I can't wait to upgrade though
