If you can't afford to just give her your old system and buy a new one, I would say buy the x1950gt (overclock it to pro speed) or x1950pro for the moment and sell the 6600gt.
A7N8X was a Socket A (athlon xp/duron/sempron) board.

She does have one yeah, but she doesn't live with me. She stays at weekends etc and moving equipment about isn't fun, so the idea is to have a 2nd pc at mine.Scougar said:

Yeah I think that was the board I had before. Not right sure what it is now, its ASUS Skt754 with nForce chipset, thats all I remember.

If I was you I'd save up and upgrade the whole system.
I was in the same position as you 6 months ago and was running a 3700+ 754 pin AGP system and very nearly ordered the AGP version of the 1950pro. However, I had some spare cash and received the pink ticket from the missus so I ended up getting a new C2D system instead.
I suppose it boils down to how long you think you'll be running your current system before you can get a new one. The extra RAM and 1950pro will be a good stop gap if its going to be quite a few months yet.
