Well, it would help if you posted your current specs. And your price range. Otherwise it's a bit tricky to know where you're coming from :)

7800GS is the newest card you can get on AGP at the moment. However it's still only about as fast as a 6800 Ultra or X850XT, so you might be better off looking for one of those two cards second hand (will be a LOT cheaper).

Also as Curio said, we need your current specs... no point upgrading if you already have a 6800/X850 ;)

SUMAN :p

ok at the mo i have an ati 9600 pro 128 mb

so i dont rly wonna spend too much money on one due to am not that rich lol so around £150 - £200

You can get a 7800GS for just over £200 then :) Or if you wanna stick with ATi you can get an X850XT for the same-ish price, but this won't be as future proof (no support for SM3).

Both of those cards will be a massive increase over your 9600 Pro!

Id try and stretch a bit for a 7800 GT, and a PCI-E mobo, as you can pick both up for about £240, and the GT is a much faster card, plus if you go for the 7800 GS on AGP, then when you come to upgrade again, the 7800 GS will only be fit for the bin as no ones going to be buying AGP by that time, the resale value of AGP cards now is ziltch. :)

That would make sense, if you didnt have to figure in the price of a new processor and better memory to go with the new board. That takes the total up by close to another £150 even if you go for lower spec stuff.

Hi there

Go for a BFG 6800 GS, they are only £135 Inc. VAT from OcUK and I guarantee you won't find a 6800 GS AGP cheaper anywhere else, in fact not even close. :)

never had a nvidia card before are they any good ? whats like the proformance like compared with ati ? like are ati better for games or are nvidia?

thanks

Totally depends. BF2 Likes nvidia IIRC. The 6800 should see a HUGE performance increase in BF2. I mean HUGE.

At the moment I have a P3.2ghz, 2gb ram, Gainward 6800GT (Golden Sample to Ultra speeds). Would it benefit me to get one of the 7800 cards on AGP, or should I just stick with what I currently have?

Stick with what you have.

The 7800GS is slower than a 6800Ultra at times.

Save a bit & go PCIE later. Cards on PCIE are cheaper too.

Upgrade now to 7800GS, for sure. if you go PCI-e, build a new rig, pass on current/old rig to squeeze, wife, girlfriend, password protect the critical stuff. that way you keep old rig and gear, she gets a good free PC, and you get a mega upgrade, gaming megladon!!

Just to note, the 7800 GS is quieter, only uses a single slot and only requires a single molex power inlet, it also consumes less power.

I sold my Ultra at auction, and the upgrade to BFG 7800GS OC cost me about £40, which I consider worth it as I hope that the 7800 will be hold a better resale value than the 6800U.

I only play Battlefield 2 at the moment, there is a slight visible difference and I am able to turn my textures up to high without problems, with the ultra there would be short pauses while switching them in memory, however I cant say if this is a result of something else other than the gfx card as I've patched bf2 since last trying high res textures on the ultra.

Get that 680GS NOW before it comes off special. Seriously, used 6800gt's are going for £130-180 on fleabay and the GS performs nearly identically to the GT. New with lifetime warranty pre-overclocked at £135  Get buying!

:Edit: In answer to the question Yes, the BFG is pre-overclocked and has lifetime warranty, and is cheaper than the others. Damn my long windedness.
